I tuned in to BBC Breakfast on Sunday morning and the ernest young man who does the Sports Report was in the studio doing the usual 'Sports Roundup' thing and the weekend 'B' team of Roger Johnson (son of our Nige) and Nina Warhurst were the news anchors.
Anyway, the point is he did his usual report. So top of Prem first, something about the womens FA Cup Final, Katie Boulters first round loss in the tennis at Indian Wells, the latest win for the England Women in the T20 cricket down in Pakistan which no one knew was going on and something about a bloke who ran the London Marathon in a chicken suit.
Then he returned to the Prem relegation scene and announced that in all probability all 3 of last years promoted teams would be relegated back to the Championship.
At that point Roger Johnson chipped in suggesting that was not necessariy a good thing, that no team promoted has been able to stay up.
Sports Reporter man told Roger not to worry, before adding that Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton will all receive paracute payments of £40 million and so should all have a good chance of bouncing back straight away.
But that wasn't Roger's point was it? He had not suddenly thought 'my life is not whole without Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton in the Prem'. He was making a wider point that such a large discrepancy between the two divisions is not a good thing.
But it was completely lost on our sports reporter man. And that troubles me!

I agree with this. Most sport news media will give a more comprehensive report of a relegation doomed team in the premier league than the amazing performance of a club like Ipswich who will be going in the opposite direction.

To be fair it was ever thus, in my youth I avidly followed all sports news and it was all Leeds, Liverpool, Arsenal Derby etc with hardly any mention of Div 2 or lower.

I can’t think of a worse promoted trio of clubs in PL history. It’s only the first time since 1998 that all three promoted clubs have come straight back down again. Last season (2022/23) all the promoted clubs stayed up quite easily. There’s no pattern to suggest a widening gap just yet.

More people care about what happens in the PL than any other English league. Thus, they get more coverage and all that coverage is positive coverage because they don’t want to upset the apple cart.

jason cundy and that bloke with him are the worst. I’ll raise you Darren Bent. I only know that because someone had it on and I asked “who is this dick on the radio?”. But yeh I’ve heard Cundy, terrible

All football interviews are utterly worthless. No one ever says anything that's not completely predictable. The idea of radio station devoted to it is just baffling.

Judging by some of the replies I did not make my point very well.
I just read my OP again and I don't have a better way of expressing it though :-)

To be honest I’m seeing a lot of coverage of the three promoted sides being relegated presented in a context of “the gulf between the Prem and the rest is so wide these days”, completely ignoring the fact that all three promoted sides stayed up last season and there have been several instances recently of newly promoted sides finishing in the top half (Wolves, Leeds, Fulham). Not to mention Brentford who were at the time the biggest minnows to make it to the Prem and are still there four seasons later.
I think the point Roger Johnson was making was a lazy one.

My point is that said sports reporter misinterpreted Johnson's point that it was not good that all 3 promoted teams got relegated as some love in for Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton. But it wasn't!!!!!!
