They play each other 4 times so that's 34 games
Er...
Dunno do they do that split season thing?
Clearly they need an 18 team league playing each other just twice Would see more progressive football as less clubs would be threatened with relegation
The best thing would be if Celtic and Rangers weren't in it, would be competitive then
Obviously none of that will happen

Daft idea tbh. Had to endure the Celtic game today. At least I was in the relative safety of my own home rather than the horrors I experienced at the New Year. Still having flashbacks to the dancing on the pool table. It’s the seasonal split. Daft idea. Had to endure the Celtic game today. Memories of my new year experience flooded back. If I’m well enough I may be up there for the Scottish Cup Final. Apparently I am expected in the pub ……

Question: There are 12 teams in it, yet they play 38 games in a season. Why? I’m sure there’s a simple answer but I don’t know what it is🤔 Each team plays the other eleven teams four times. 4 x 11 = 38 it's basic Scottish maths

Seasonal split tables split into championship qualification relegation qualification so table splits in half don't know how it works after that mind think the bottom relegated next one up plays who finishes 2nd in div one and so on.

Apparently I am expected in the pub …… What does the seasonal split mean? After this first phase of matches, by which time all clubs have played 33 games, the league splits into two halves – a "top six" section and a "bottom six" section. Each club plays a further five matches, one against each of the other five teams in their own section.

Each club plays a further five matches, one against each of the other five teams in their own section. Why? It was put in place when the division increased from 10 to 12 teams. "The split format was created to prevent the fixture burden of asking those teams to also play each other four times, which would mean an unwieldy total of 44 league games per season."

The daft thing is with the split the table looks lob sided, the team in 6th appear to have less points than the team in 7th, because the team in seventh win more post split than the team in 6th.

There's a few leagues in Europe that do the split thing. I think Belgium and Denmark do it aswell of the top of my head.

There's 33 games in the first part of the season so the 12 teams play everyone 3 times. Then the top 6 play each other and the bottom 6 play each other over another 5 games to make 38. If you've played them twice at home already then you'll be away in the split so theoretically you can be away or at home for the last 5 games although it never really works out like that.
It's shit really as Dundee have had a great season but are currently sitting 9th as the reward for a decent season is an extra couple of games v the Old Firm. In theory you could have a top 6 finish and get knocked out first round of each cup by an old firm team meaning 25% of your season is spent playing teams with a vast advantage over you.
When Rangers went bump Aberdeen had a chance to vote against the ridiculous 10/2 vote regime but bottled it to keep the status quo. All the diddy club fans seem to want to increase the league to 16 and play each other twice. Old firm don't want that though as that would be two OF games down the pan plus it would stop it being a pointless procession - if a diddy team got 4-6 points from the 12 points from games v Rangers and Celtic then they're in the hunt for the title. Pinching a win and draw at home is doable but at the minute they need to pinch 2 wins and 2 draws at least which is massively more difficult with the gulf in resource.

There's a few leagues in Europe that do the split thing. I think Belgium and Denmark do it aswell of the top of my head. Belgium have some bonkers european playoff system: Europa League Playoff Until 2016, the teams ranked 7 to 14 after the regular season enter the playoffs 2, with teams ranked 7th, 9th, 12th, and 14th entering group A and teams ranked 8th, 10th, 11th, and 13th entering group B. In each group, each team plays each of its three opponents twice. The winner of each group played the final game in two legs to determine the winner of the playoffs 2. The winner of the playoffs 2 then plays a home and away game against either the fourth-place or fifth-place team from the playoffs 1 for the final Europa League ticket, with the opponent depending on whether the Belgian Cup winner ended in the top four of the playoff 1 or not.
From 2016, the system was changed as now the teams ranked 7 to 16 are joined by six teams from the Belgian First Division B and divided into four groups of four teams. The winners of each groups now play a single match to determine the overall playoff winner, with the winner playing the fifth-placed team from playoff 1 in a single match for the final Europa League ticket.Relegation in Argentina is bat shit mental too - think it was changed to try to help Boca or River avoid relegation: Relegation Relegation is based on an averaging system.[14] At the end of the season, the two teams with the worst three-year averages are relegated, while the winner and runner-up of Primera Nacional championship are promoted to Primera.

Surely there's an argument to move to a Premier League leagues of 18 teams, if you added Dundee United, Dunfermline, Raith Rovers, Partick Thistle, Inverness Caledonians and Falkirk for example to the current crop that would be fairly competitive and give more teams the chance to pick up revenue from a visit of Celtic and Rangers (although those in the top league might not like it as some will be getting 2 games against them currently).
Then you could have 2 league of 12 below and still do the split league thing, or 3 leagues of 10 with maybe the bottom two leagues being regionalised to help the smaller clubs with the addition of a few of the stronger Lowland/Highland league teams to make up the numbers.

In my younger days they had 22 in their top division as we did, I assume the reduction was all about money and an attempt to only have the better supported clubs and also have more old firm derbies. It is a boring 2 horse race league, no other winners since Fergusan's Aberdeen in 1985.

It's a shame that Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibs can't just break that stranglehold as they're all big clubs in their own right. No sign of it though Hearts got close for a season or two the gap seems bigger now though if anything.....

I mean yes they are big clubs really but Aberdeen and Hibs have massively underperformed this season and although Hearts have third place wrapped up which is a great season all things considered, they are twenty odd points adrift of league leaders Celtic. As you say it would be great if they could bridge that gap but it's hard to ever see it happen which is basically shite as the league would develop so much better if that were the case. On a side note I'd love us to sign Shankland from Hearts and have thought so for a few seasons now. I watch a fair bit of Scottish Premiership football and I reckon he would bang them in for a team in our league.

The finances make it difficult as Celtic's turnover is £100m, Rangers £90m and Aberdeen's £15m. The tv deal has helped the diddy clubs slightly as it is a more fair split although Rangers and Celtic still get almost half of it. The other main issue is you look at Dutch and Portuguese leagues where big teams dictate but is a closer competition - they spend serious money in their local league so everyone benefits. Rangers and Celtic never buy internally unless they can take the piss on a fee or tap them on a Bosman. Scott Wright moved from Aberdeen to Rangers for £175k plus a loan of a youth player from memory in 2021 which is the last time either have spent any money in the SPL. Instead, Calvin Ramsay moves from Aberdeen to Liverpool for £4m and disappears. Rangers should be looking to buy him to replace Patterson then sell him on for bigger money with Aberdeen getting a sell on but neither cheek of the arse is interested in benefiting the SPL until they start moaning about competition getting humped in Europe.
