Knocked for six by this. Legendary sound engineer and a gigantic figure in alternative/DIY/punk/hardcore music for many decades. An abrasive but principled bloke.. not many men have had more of an influence on the direction of my own musical journey than him. I'll be listening to Shellac and Rapeman for the rest of the day.

Didn't drink, didn't do drugs, heart attack at 61.
You've got to be a pretty principled fellow, to turn down the amount of money that he did.
A proper punk.
The snare sound on the original mix of this is insane!

He said in an interview once that he liked “ugly music”. That always really stuck with me. I just looked up the full quote:
“My tastes are kind of trashy. The music I like is ugly, music I listen to for invigoration, the music that animates me and excites me - a lot of it is awful, in categorical terms.”
I love that quote. Such a simple idea but powerful - like a validation for anyone who likes music that other people think is terrible.
Here’s to ugly music.

I love a lot of records he's produced and had tickets to see Shellac next month but gotta be honest, some of the quotes I've read for the first time tonight have genuinely turned my stomach. There's being an edgelord and then there's, well being a paedophile.

The snare sound on the original mix of this is insane! I really like In Utero, but I always thought it was underproduced. Nevermind had such a powerful sound, but listening to In Utero it felt like the volume had been turned down. The mix just didn't get enough oomph out of those guitars.

Which mix are you talking about? The original Albini mix (which I posted) is absolutely dynamite BECAUSE it's underproduced, without the BV's and the over(?) production of the final mix, the rawness of the original mix is so explosive. Both the drums and guitars have so much more space to breath in and are as dynamic as fuck, sounding pretty much like how'd they'd play it live. It was pure Albini.

You’ll find it from that.. to be clear the accusation isn’t that he actually *did* anything inappropriate. I was hoping the thread wouldn’t go down this road really

I'm thinking more the final mix, the CDs bought from the store. For instance, I watched a televised live show of Scentless Apprentice. It sounded amazing, but the CD version sounds kind of muffled. The same with Radio Friendly Unit Shifter.

There's a thread on it on the Drowned in Sound forum if you really must.

I can't quite believe it wasn't more widely known tbh. Admitting possessing, enjoying and justifying child abuse against toddlers is "doing" something inappropriate in my eyes. I was a fan and the new shellac vinyl is probably gonna drop through my letterbox today or tomorrow, but honestly, fuck him having learned this. Horrifying.

A Great producer who tried to use old school gear whenever possible. He did an album with one of my friends who loved the experience....RIP
