Just read an article on the BBC about the demise of this club now playing in the German second division in front of crowds of 62000. Relegated last year they are now fighting against a second consecutive relegation. If they are relegated they will not get a licence to play in the third division because of the drop in revenue that would bring and the fact that they are massively in debt meaning they are not seen as a viable club for the third tier. They would have to play in the non league if they are relegated. Three matches to go I think and they won on Saturday taking them five points clear with three games left, two against relegation rivals. The interesting thing in relation to Stoke is that they ousted their long term, local billionaire owner in 2020. Admittedly for no footballing reasons-comments about Africa and a Covid outbreak at his factory, but the fans, who in Germany hold a 51% share of the football club, want to get him back to invest his money again. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/ckr5yy29k82o

Interesting post though mate, I had no idea they were in such bother. Had some good players over the years.

Still pulling in 62,000 for a second division match is impressive.

Some really big teams in the German 2nd division this season.
You've got Shalke, then Hertha Berlin who have had 70,000 crowds, Hamburg (60,000) and Hannover, Nuremberg, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Kaiserslautern (50,000+). Even after that you've got St Pauli, Hansa Rostock and Karlsruher (30,000+)

And based in Gelsenkirchen, which is a city the same size as Stoke with a population of 260,000 I know it's part of the Ruhr conurbation but, simply put, they can claim that 1 in 4 of the city's population go and watch them!

Dortmund v Stuttgart on the Saturday and Fortuna v Eintracht Braunschweig on Sunday. Both matches complete sell outs. It’s not hard to see why, the whole match day is catered towards the fans and not ripping them off at every turn. Free travel to and from games, cheap food/drink at the multiple fan zones and cheap match tickets (Fortuna have run a scheme this season whereby 3 games have been completely free, one of which was this one). The atmosphere at both games was electric.

The Dortmund ticket I had was for the standing section and €18.50 face value and not sure about Fortuna Düsseldorf’s pricing as it was free but I imagine it’s fairly cheap.

Fans are treated better over there. Also, they don't have the poverty that we have, they have a better standard of living, more secure jobs, housing is more accessible. Basically they can relax and spend a bit on watching their team play each weekend

Correction: they had FC Mülheim, who I supported when I lived in Germany, and a ton of other minor clubs in the area. And similar traditionsvereine who also used to be good like MSV Duisburg, Fortuna Dùsseldorf, RotWeiss Essen et al. They're still pulling in those vast numbers, because the historical sense of belonging to the club. None of those regulars will desert the club because of a little hard times.

Now would be the wrong time of the season to check but it wouldn’t surprise me if the match kits are far cheaper in the club shops too.

I drove from Gladbeck to south Essen a few weeks ago, taking a detour for bad traffic. My God that area where the newer coal seams were is vast: Gelsenkirchen, Buer, Altenessen, Bottrop, Recklinghausen. They’ll always have millions on their doorstep. Glück auf anyway duck.

I watch quite a bit of Bundesliga 2, lots of videos on the official website, St Pauli look like being promoted this time, Hamburg drifting away into 3rd or 4th again

If Schalke do drop out of the league, might there be some decent players we could snap up? Once they get a taste of a bacon and chayze oatcake, they’ll never go back.

Holstein Kiel on the verge of promotion to the Bundesliga with 3 games to go, 5 clear of 3rd.
Played in the Regionalliga (4th tier) in 2012. First time in the top flight since 1963!
Cologne another big team with a 50k stadium to be in Bundesliga 2 next season.

Great club are schalke. I’ve been there 3 times- wonderful club and fans. Superb atomosphere and tremendous ground.
Their fall from grace has been drastic and, like us, they’ve been chopping and changing managers / sporting directors like the wind.
Having been back in the top flight last year I did expect them to spend a bit more to ensure safety- but the big signings just never came. The financial issues have crippled them. Despite being one of the biggest clubs in Europe they just can’t seem to be Abel to spend and end up with a team of kids and journeymen.
Simon Terrode - the BL2’s highest ever scorer- has seemingly lost his touch with age. Kenan Karamans goals have been invaluable and their home form looks enough to keep them up.
The support however is unwavering and the consistency in the crowds is incredible- this wouldnt happen here in England ( look at our own!).
Hopefully they’re on the upward trajectory again but to see them go into the regionalliga would be one of the biggest travesty’s in world football and, further , call into the question the well intentioned , but flawed, German model.
