What do they do with it? Often losing them in some mysterious way. Are there players who have invested them wisely?
I had to start this thread after I read about the Swedish midfielder at National level Robert Prytz who was mentioned in the best players we didn't sign thread.
Once he was a professional footballer at Glasgow Rangers, Verona, Atalanta, Young Boys (two sessions), Kilmarnock and others. This was mostly in the 80ies.
After the career he took a job as a mover, got arthritis in his knees and now he works cleaning beer taps.
Why is he still working and with that? Couldn't he have saved enough? I'm confused.
😵💫

One of the first things that should be written into an academy contract is a money management course. It should be part of their training.

I caught five minutes on the radio discussing Stoke's academy and heard that once under contract a sizable proportion of the time is given over to education.

I remember an interview with Graeme Murty - solid pro with a Championship/ Premier league career but staying at Reading probably cost him a chunk of money.
He basically said he was planning for retirement from early doors - didn’t have a stupid car, house was paid off and the pension would mean he never had to work again. Avoided daft investment schemes as didn’t need more money just his money paid out monthly.
When he talked about it he made it sound easy but he’d obviously got good roots- the temptation for others must be massive!

Divorces can be quite costly - as Ray Parlour found.

Or, maybe it’s like the US, where the better athletes get allowances and have their education propped up by others. It’s not like footballers have a reputation for being the brightest sparks.

Always remember Dave Kitson being skint then remembering he’d bought a few properties in Dubai on a preseason tour instead of going on the piss. Can’t understand a lifestyle where you forget you’ve bought properties in Dubai!

Steve Staunton used to use the same bank as me
Lost all his money he earned from football investing in the Irish film industry. Think he went bankrupt

Think of our own Jermaine Pennat. Forgot he left a Porche (top of the range) at a train station. Forgot he owned a mansion in Cheshire (broken into and used as a drug factory ,then burned down.) made more than 10 million now skint....................
