Absolutely brilliant. If you get somebody to read this board then thanks Nick Thorley. I could tell you were a Tean/Checkley fella with your mention of Pat Mc'Garry's Paper Shop. (I lived in Checkley for a number of years.) Ange is right... it will always go down as a pivotal moment in our history. It inspired the whole city and I still get melancholy every time I hear it. It was the complete opposite of where we are now. How the mighty have fallen. And thanks OP for posting this. OS.

It’s easy to forget how special a time that was isn’t it?

It’s easy to forget how special a time that was isn’t it? I was thinking this recently. The feverish excitement of the final straight of that season, continued into the first Prem season, was something extremely rare in football that not many fans get to experience. I think the main reason for it was that it was so unexpected. With a decade of bouncing between tiers 2 and 3 so fresh in the memory, at least one generation of our fans had long given up hope of *ever* seeing us play in the top division - and that’s not an exaggeration, with the advent of the Premier League creating an ever-stronger sense of division as I was growing up, the idea of ever seeing Stoke compete at the same level as the likes of Man Yoo and Arsenal and Chelsea was so unlikely it was almost fantastical - for me it occupied the same sphere as my schoolboy daydreams of scoring the winner at Wembley myself. Nice to think about but never going to happen. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, we had a chance. It was that collective realisation that something that had seemed so utterly impossible was within our reach that so galvanised and enraptured our fans, the media, the whole city. It really was magical. We’re so jaded now.. we expect to be challenging for promotion - as we absolutely should, don’t get me wrong - but it’s hard to imagine experiencing that sort of fever-pitch thrill again.

Ray Clemence the other England captain to play for them. Blimey, did not know that. Is a popular football quiz question mate. The three England captains who played for Scunthorpe? Keegan, Clemence and Botham.

Haha - 'who comes up with that nonsense!' referring to people who called in. What a bloke.
I remember the many people calling in saying Rory Delap needed to retire because of his age. He went on to play 125+ games in the Premier League for Stoke.

The togetherness around the club at that time was something I will never forget. The supporters loved the players and the players loved the supporters.

I remember someone ringing Radio Stoke complaining about the roads and pavements in Meir and how they'd spent a fortune on the MIR space station instead of fixing the roads
The presenter politely told him that the space project was not not funded by the folk of Meir. The same sounding fella complained about Iceland the freezer store buying his beloved Stoke City. First time I heard Pottermouth I thought was the same character as was a similar voice and obviously a crank caller but a good one. Often wondered if was him
