60 years ago Stoke City 9 Ipswich Town 1. All the forward line scored 7 to 11 in old fashioned numbering. Right wing to Left wing - Dobing, Viollet, Ritchie, McIlroy & Bebbington. Oh for a team that could do that now!!

Ipswich were on a massive plummet having been promoted to Div 1 in 1961 and, under Alf Ramsey, won the championship at first attempt. Following Ramsey departure to become manager of England at the end of 62-63 they went into massive decline. They were relegated at the end of 63-64 and were on the wrong end of several very heavy defeats. The 9-1 win wasn’t their heaviest as they were crushed 10-1 by Fulham and also shipped 6 and 7 goals on several occasions. Incidentally we also knocked them out of the FA cup that season.

Before my time but it seems we got to the League Cup final this same season beating minnows Manchester City in the semi-finals before losing 4-3 to Leicester City in the final over 2 legs.

I believe it was also Grand National day
My uncle was a very keen Stoke fan didn't miss a game at home for many years and went to every away game he could (not always that easy in the 60's) However he was also a very keen Horse racing fan and loved the Grand National that year he missed the Stoke game and would have been apoplectic about missing a 9 goal victory but was somewhat comforted by having both the winner and the runner up in the National
He hated Xmas (or many aspects of it) In later years he used to have a full on Xmas dinner, all the trimmings but on Grand National day as that was 'his Xmas'

At the Stoke City quiz competition held at Whisper Lane in the mid-1980s, one of the trickier questions was naming the starting 11 for us in this game.

Got to give this a go…. Lawrie Leslie Tony Allen Eric Skeels Eddie Stuart George Kinnell Calvin Palmer Denis Violet Peter Dobing John Ritchie Keith Bebbington Jimmy McIlroy I pretty sure Bill Asprey played. To save the few hairs that most of us who were there may (or may not) have, the team that day was: (1)Leslie, (2)Asprey, (3)Allen, (4)Palmer, (5)Kinnell, (6)Skeels, (7)Dobing, (8)Violet, (9)Richie, (10)McIlroy, (11)Bebbington; It was the second time in 4 years Stoke has scored 9 (nine) and as a young lad, I just assumed it was one of those things that would happen regularly. I don't think my young self would have believed it if I could have told him then that 60 years later just scoring a goal at home would be a novelty.

I remember that game and lost count how many we had scored after about 6 goals. Good team that was. As a boy I played many a game in the local area with Tony Allen and he was later my regular newsagent in Blythe Bridge, great player he was! Used to have my hair cut by Sir Stans brother and played cricket with Stans other brother who used be kitted out in the back alley in pads/gloves/whites the lot!

Probably the hardest question at the Whisper Lane quiz came in the semi-final.
It was; name the starting 11 when we played at White Hart Lane in February 1972.
The quick witted amongst you will realise this was our last game before the cup final at Wembley and so Waddo rested most of his regular starters.
The team; Banks, Jump, Skeels, Smith, Jackson, Bloor, Stevenson, Haslegrave, Burrows, Greenhoff, Conroy.
I don't think any of the teams were close to all 11 players. I remember we thought Banks and Conroy would be the two rested (wrong as usual)
For the record, we lost to two Martin Chivers goals, the second being an horrendous error by Banksie who let an innocuous through ball squirm from his grasp straight to Chivers.

We only won one more league game that season after the Spurs game. In fact we only won 2 league games after 6th November the previous year. Fortunately a decent early season run and many drawn games in last 25 q kept us from a relegation battle.
