Totally agree that people have motives and make mistakes. But it scares me that the idea is to "trust no one". That's what Putin, Xi, Trump etc are relying on, that people will just believe lies as much as reality. I saw it in my work where there's a reality that industry doesn't like, so they paid a load of propagandists to lie to the public to trick them. It fucking sucks. The problem of course is working out who to trust! I do get what you’re saying and agree to an extent but I see it frequently on here where you get some posters that think they’re always right and others that have different views are idiots, know nothing and are this, that or the other. I guess I’m just mistrusting because no one’s always right or always wrong. In the same respect that the Guardian aren’t always and the Mail wrong and visa versa. I think the truths somewhere in the middle. Oh, a reason why I care... When I was a kid my granddad smoked himself into two cancers. I watched him get sad and desperate as he wasted away, inhaling the smoke through the tracheotomy hole in his throat. He really thought there were two sides to the smoking & cancer story, because he couldn't see the tobacco industry liars for what they are. I've come to terms with it now, but it hurt a lot as a kid because I spent every day after primary school round at the grandparents and he was the first person I watched die. Maybe it would have gone the same way if he'd believed accurate news instead of falling into the trap of "well we don't know, I heard there's two sides and those nerdy doctors sound dodgy". But even today it feels to me like those tobbaco liars stole that free choice from him. I just wanted him to make an informed choice.

I know it was a joke but I learned so many things around construction during the lockdown fiasco on YouTube. Who needs college?! It's weird I can't get my head around learning things from YouTube but I know of several people for whom it's a go to. When Covid struck my daughter's career involving international travel effectively ended overnight. As she realised months later that it wasn't coming back she used YouTube videos to learn a completely new trade from which she now has a profitable business. What trade was that?

I obviously don’t know what your daughter does but you can find absolutely anything if you go down the wormhole of YouTube

I think the truths somewhere in the middle. There's a little comic that explains my feelings, it's a newsroom where the host says summat like "today we're talking maths, on one side professor X says that 1+1=2, but on the other hand we have a lobbyist who says 1+1=20. This is complicated and the truth must be is in the middle". When I see that used with important real-world stuff it does my nut in.
But most things aren't black and white like that so I hear what you're saying. I try to pump the brakes on being arrogant but it's so hard when everyone else is so fucking wrong all the time still it's important to really listen to and respect people and try not to get too certain without good cause. Indeed I guess I’m anti smartarse. I’d rather be gullable, Imperfect and a bit daft than arrogant. I could never use one publication, one politician as the bible / hero . None of us are perfect.

Incredible that is, you can now just learn some skills that used to be guarded inside families or companies right? Good on her! YouTube's great for things like simple car maintenance too, but it failed to teach me how to cross properly with my left peg. Even after watching about 20 videos on weak foot technique ffs.

I started this thread since I had the impression you were in general more interested in what was going on in the whole wide world than in your own neighbourhood or city.

CNN and Fox (National). Sky News on TV while I make breakfast in the mornings for the U.K. Once or twice a week, I’ll go on Al-Jazeera for international. I think that the latter is very good for African news and news from the Middle East. My local news is essentially all about new construction, so I don’t much bother with that. During lockdown I loved watching videos on carpentry, especially for construction. I promise it's fascinating. I use YouTube when I can’t figure out basic things like how to clean my coffee machine properly. I like it for that and music videos. There’s a site called JOVE which runs through lab protocols as well. That can sometimes be better than just reading one without context.

When I was brought up we almost only watched the local tv news and read the local news in the morning paper (yeah we had one of those). When we had the time we read or watched the National news.
I had relatives saying, why listen to what's going on in far away countries, their wars and shit, when you can't do anything about it?!
At the same time, I had class mates who ONLY read and listened to international news and countries far away. Same with work mates of today.

I do watch news channels every day but these days I take everything with a pinch of salt. BBC Verified is better though. I also get much of my news off here. I log in every day but rarely post because most stuff is like an echo chamber. I like Wannabee's posts because he backs them up with evidence. I also enjoy Paul N's posts because he's thorough and always determined to get to the bottom of things. For Ukraine I read mtrstudent's posts to keep me up to date with things over there. There are others I like that are very informative too. I also learn a lot of stuff that I wasn't aware of. For instance, Ely posts stuff about drug use that I was ignorant about. Keep it up guys.
OS.

There's some excellent posters on here if you cut through the crap, I remember estrangedsonoffaye on the Covid thread for example being excellent, you wouldn't have got anywhere near that level of detail from anywhere in the mainstream media.......

Not much in detail but generally in this order on a daily basis...bbc football, bbc sport, bbc news, bbc business news.
Aside from that I'll have a gander at the local news magazine for about 2 minutes.
Don't bother with papers or news channels unless something bigs happened.

Someone about 2 years ago asked me would I do them a favour and mop something up by a swimming pool...was a mop and bucket there. All I managed to do was spread the mess around as never used a mop before. I actually had to go to You Tube to watch a video on how to mop a spillage up and rinse out a mop in a bucket . It is great for anything, yep . Unfortunately was rumbled watching the video and every one she knows refers to me as the person who had never used a mop before and had to You Tube it

Now that's an interesting one I never learned as a young lad to use my left peg apart from standing on it while kicking with my right so when my lad arrived I was determined that he would be two footed. Over ten years or so we would have a kick about using both feet and I kid you not I was able to pass and shoot with my left peg.

It's hard to explain feelings. Of course it could be important to follow the international news and it affects us all. It's just that I haven't met anyone around here where I live who has talked about Palestine, Israel, Ukraine, Russia or Afghanistan at all, they're more interested in why the grocery shop is closing down the street.

I suppose that I don’t really care if people think I’m stupid or not. If I can’t figure something out and the answer is available elsewhere, I’d rather spend 5 minutes watching a video than 5 hours trying to figure it out.

BBC and newsnow I like to use for an overview of news. Then if I want to dig deeper I tend to try and read commentaries from people rather than news articles. Like views on here, twitter or reddit for instance. For local news I find my local Facebook community groups as one of the best sources. Any interesting drama or scandal usually gets aired out on there before the journalists get wind. I have lost alot of trust in the media over the last decade and became much more aware of their vested interests. This has led me to probably have a much more cyclical view of the world too and our "democracy". But we can always hope
