24 year old world marathon record holder killed in a road accident 😳 A prodigious talent who was rewriting history. We’ll never know if he would have been the first person to officially go sub-2 but it would have been more surprising if he had not. He was the future of distance running and this has hit me far harder than this type of news usually does. RIP. Tragic news for his family and friends.

RIP Kelvin, a superb talent who was only just starting to reach his peak. I was just going to post this on the oatcake running club thread as I didn't think many would know him outside the sport, I would hope that there will be marks of respect coming up in some events soon.

Tragic, and his coach was killed too. I reckon he could have broken the 2 hour mark. RIP both.
OS.

Absolutely irrelevant in the scheme of things, but we will also never know if Kiptum would have been selected by Kenya for the Olympics. The logical answer was yes, but it was yet to be confirmed and Kenyan athletics were pretty desperate to avoid him racing against Kipchoge as Eliud is still the face of Kenyan running, but Kiptum was simply quicker. I’ll point out that this isn’t some kind of conspiracy theory lunacy about his tragic death either, it’s just a question which has been asked for a while.

The two of them running together in the Olympic marathon was something lots of people were really looking forward to seeing, and as the Paris Olympic marathon is also allowing 20,000 other runners to run it as well, something people can say they've raced against two of the greats, albeit from way behind
