Thrashings / drubbings / trouncings... call them what you will. They either result in the heights of ecstasy, or the depths of despair. You'll never forget the big wins... Our record Premier League victory? Easy! Stoke 6 Liverpool 1. Oh glorious day! But how many can remember our record Premier League defeat? (I'll tell you at the end of the post if you still haven't recalled it). And what scoreline exactly does constitute a thrashing anyway? Not a 3-0 in my eyes, that's just a comfortable win. But a 5-2 maybe does? (Even though it's the same goal difference?!?) Anyway, as for the biggest win that I've ever personally seen; that was 7-2 vs Leeds in the 80s. One of two occasions when I've seen us 5-0 up at half time; the other being that aforementioned drubbing of Liverpool. The total disbelief that I felt at half time, on each of those occasions, probably came from years of preconditioning. Negative expectations firmly set in place, from watching countless dull cagey opening periods, without so much as a shot on target. So when those first half annihilations then happened, I experienced incredulity and euphoria in equal measure. But then as the second half kick offs approached again, a little bit of nerves set in... don't get the pipe and slippers out now, lads! I wanted some showboating, and fans taking the piss out of the miserable-looking away supporters, plus at least one more goal; to send us all home happy. And thankfully Stoke obliged. Now then, as for the biggest defeat that I've ever personally seen? I believe it was at Old Trafford; Man United 5 Stoke City 0, back in the mid-1980s. My odd memory of that game is us being 5 down, and yet still the glory hunting Manc fans who were sat nearby were moaning; that our forwards were running rings round them! So probably a slightly unfair scoreline in the end, and it was one that we had kind of expected beforehands might happen anyway. I do recall listening on Radio 5 however, when we lost 0-8 at home to Liverpool in the League Cup in the year 2000, and that score was a big shock. I had felt strangely optimistic before the game that an upset might be on the cards, and that optimism was buoyed by Peter Thorne hitting the post early on. It sounded from the match reports like a Potters goal was only a matter of time! When shortly afterwards the radio host then said "news of a goal at the Britannia stadium" it was somewhat unexpected to hear that it was Liverpool who had nabbed it. But that then set the pattern for the night. I'll never forget when the 6 or 7th goal was announced as having happened, the radio host chuckled "surely this time it's Stoke who've got it?!?", but the match reporter again confirmed otherwise. I felt shell-shocked at full time, and can only imagine what those Stokies who were in attendance must have felt like. (Rumours abound that Henrik Risom was one of them, and indeed that he was on the pitch playing throughout it all; but those reports remain unconfirmed!) Anyway that leads me onto a weird thought...when was the last time that we received a real pasting from somebody? Unless there's something I've forgotten, we haven't suffered a tonking for a good while now; even though everyone would agree we've been underperforming for years. Am I right? If so, why is that? (I'm going to quickly move on from that thought, as I can see I might be tempting fate here somewhat...!) So to conclude then, what was that record Premier League defeat of ours, that I alluded to earlier? Answer: it was 7-0 vs Chelsea. File that one under "to be forgotten" for me... not that I ever would have forgotten it, if we'd done that to them! Right then; any other recollections of thrashings, folks; either good memories or bad?!?

Was at the Vic in our first season back in Div 1 when we thrashed Ipswich 9-1. Ipswich were league champions 2 seasons before in 61-62, but were relegated 63-64.

I have a running debate with a group of mates about what constitutes a thrashing. I think a four-goal difference is enough but they insist on five. I think that's too stringent a standard (cutely referred to as the "thrashold").
Gets more interesting when considering two-leg ties.. if you win the 1st leg 6-0 but then draw the 2nd 1-1, I don't think that can be called an overall thrashing. I think you have to win both games.
In the Prem, aside from the 6-1 did we ever hit anyone for 5? Don't think so. Think we beat Villa and Newcastle 4-0, anyone else?

Wasn't at the Chelsea 7-0 but was at the etihad for the 7-2 thrashing by citeh, 3 down at halftime we score 2 quick goals early 2nd half was like poking a hornets nest managed to slip out onto their buses back to piccadilly unscathed perhaps helped that the misses was with me...

Watched the 7-2 defeat vs Citeh live on Sky. Afterwards I wanted to file it away under "bad day at the office"; because of the quality of the opposition. But there was also a nagging feeling that the solidity and spirit, which we'd taken for granted for years, might not be there any more. It was all downhill to The Championship after that.

Nothing eclipses it more than winning 5-0 in an FA cup semi final
The 6-1 loss at Wigan 2001 was the lowest point. We would have gone top had we won. They were near the bottom. Awful night

I always think that 7 (SEVEN) or above, is a real proper thumping. Teams get 5s and 6s from time to time, but 7s are a real rarity. The gap between scoring 6 and scoring 7, somehow to me, feels much bigger than the gap between 5 and 6.
I think it’s just a football thing, possibly exacerbated by the vidiprinter’s need to display 7 (SEVEN) with the word in brackets and in capital letters, next to it. I mean, 6 never got that treatment!

Beating Arsenal 5-0 in their 70/71 double season. Still the best individual performance I have ever seen us produce but I would have happy traded it for the semi-final defeat later in the season.

If Bojan’s goal wasn’t ruled out against Arsenal we’d have gone on to win that game 8 or 9 nil I’m convinced of it.
We absolutely destroyed the cunts.

I was at the liverpool 8-0 pasting.
I remember Thorne hit the post after a few minutes at 0-0, and after that Robbie fowler took us to the cleaners.
Even the score board lost count as it said 9-0 at one point.
I'll never forget the sentinel headline the next day. It said "MASSACRE'

It took ESPN about three or four minutes to realise it had been ruled out, they changed the scoreboard and everything. When Arsenal scored their first I still thought we were 4-0 up.

A 4 goal margin I'd say is the benchmark for a thrashing. 3 goals= heavy defeat.

Well if four goals is the margin for a thrashing, then Super Jon Walters should be even more sheepish about that 4-0 loss to Chelsea.
A game in which he scored two own goals, missed a penalty, and kicked the ball in his own face!
Not sure any footballer has ever had a more disastrous day at the office.
