Hit a pot hole recently which set me back £144 for a tyre, I've always assumed my Car Road Tax went towards road maintenance, new scheme’s etc but and deductions from my income went to fund the NHS etc, etc but how wrong I am, literally being taxed twice for the same thing. The Chap across the road has just been telling me that a pot hole in Burleydam close to us there was 3 cars at the same time at the side of the road with punctures from the same pot hole and the garage close by had 19 cars in one week with punctures. I’ve put a claim in with CE Council for a tyre, as above £144 then crazily they’ve outsourced it to a solicitors in Ipswich, which will 100% be a damn site more than my tyre.
Despite the common usage of the term 'road tax,' the official name is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). This term is more accurate as the levy is imposed on the vehicle rather than the usage of the road.
So, what does VED really pay for? Contrary to popular belief, VED doesn't directly fund road construction or maintenance. Instead, it goes into the central government fund, just like other forms of tax such as council tax and corporation tax.

Unsurprisingly, the insane amount of taxes we pay to drive don’t get properly funnelled back into proper maintenance. A road by me was resurfaced recently, they removed the top layer and spread that horrible loose grit type surface on that stayed there for about 2 weeks. Then they literally came and spread a thin layer of tar like product on top to bind it all together - absolutely shocking surface which has already started to crack around grids etc. typical modern day Britain approach to doing the bare minimum as cheaply as possible.
Problem is, pot holes will get worse now that vehicles are getting heavier - in particular electric vehicles. The additional weight will wear road surfaces more.

I try to remember where the pot holes are but it’s impossible as they’re popping up what seems like daily now, I’m honestly trying to not use my car as the tyres are 235/35 R19 run flats, the slightest hole and it’s a sickening crack every time.
Spent a fair bit of time googling this and there’s plenty of predatory solicitors who’ll take up your case with local authorities.

We had that loose grit by us and we ended up with a smashed car window because of it, I can't stand the stuff. Another occasion a Magnum taxi came flying past me once when I was driving slowly on it and sprayed may car in a shit load of those stones. Never seen tar put down, the stones have always been left loose for weeks until they eventually thin out here. I'm still not sure what the purpose of them is.

I'm suspicious that the inaction regarding filling them is a deliberate tactic to reduce road traffic. I've been okay until this year and suffered 2 tyre bursts as a result of pot holes and a lack of road maintenance. I suspect the knock on effect of one has affected a wheel bearing too that I'll have to fork out for. You used to be able to report them on the fix my street app until SOTCC prevented their boundaries being reported on it. You can use this instead but I find it takes an awful long time for them to rectify the issues. www.stoke.gov.uk/info/20056/road_problems

You can't say anything bad about EVs or you'll be labelled a climate change denier. Bow down to the climate change mafia or you will pay 😆 But fear not because now they've cancelled hs2 to Manchester we are going to get billions for infrastructure in the norf and a whole pile of dosh to make our roads brilliant. The cash is on the way just be patient and the govt will definitely level us up with our southern neighbours. Just a matter of time now.............👀

I live just off the Whitchurch Road, 5 miles south of Nantwich and what you've said there about the pot hole in Burleydam is entirely true. In the last 12 months, I've had to replace a tyre, a wheel bearing and part of my exhaust in three separate incidents due to pot holes round here. It is absolutely disgusting what has happened to our roads in recent years, I used to drive on the continent a lot and I can't ever remember it being anything like what we're faced with each day now.

Whatever you do avoid Coole Lane, Audlem to Nantwich, horrendous and resembles a war zone setting “and” no doubt the dip next to Corbrook Care Home will be flooded and closed yet again as CE Council somehow spent weeks on the problem and made it ten times worse, honestly CE are total crap.

Stoke City Council are estimated to be £200 million down since around 2015, due to cuts in Government grants. And it's not just Labour councils, an awful lot of Tory run councils are on the verge of Bankruptcy too.

Difficult to simply curse the council.

I know first hand how fucking appalling they are at managing our money. Eye-watering some of it

Do they repair them badly so that it needs doing again not long after? Keeps money rolling in and people in jobs. There is no way they use long lasting stuff when repairing roads, as it just washes away once there's a flood or spell of bad weather.

And when they get a middle of the night 20 min repair they are back again inside a month during the winter. Its a fucking joke. Do it properly for fux sakes. And then I can moan about the temporary traffic lights 🤣

Last week temporary traffic lights on the Audlem Road, obviously days before any work started, new pot hole now there with you guessed new tarmac sunken.
Loads of cars with punctures in the layby just past the pothole , it’s not just road deteriorating it’s shit workmen.
I actually stopped last night offering my assistance to a stranded driver.
I’ve found myself concentrating fully on the bit of road in front of me for potholes rather than further afield, heaven forbid if someone was to step out in front of me.

I've seen it roll down Cromer Road under its own steam and on the back of a low loader after the trial I think. I only say it's not theirs as I don't think they could afford the capital outlay.
