Friend of mine has a season ticket at Sunderland and he sits in the fairly expensive section. They have relocated all of the people in his part of the stadium to create an executive area for Newcastle and are charging £400 for his seat that they've moved him from...
He really can't believe how the last 6 months have gone. From sacking Mowbray, which he says was only meant to be a short term solution anyway, to then hiring a bit of a loser of a manager. This stuff for the Derby and just generally they're completely alienating the fans.
He says they basically brought the new man in because he was free, on about £400k per year wages and would work with the entire of the current back room staff, not needing any of their own team.
Fans are not happy up there.

To be fair 'Cheer Up Peter Reid' was a big Sunderland supporters song when they won promotion in 1996, they had a music video and everything. Newcastle (and us with 'Cheer up Johnny Rudge') just nicked it and changed the words! Still, an absolute PR disaster for them.

Yep and Niall Quinn's disco pants To be fair, we're not exactly ones to judge when it comes to behaviour at local away grounds 😁. Some fitted their bathrooms out at our last one

Would we do that for the Vale.... 🤔 (Joke) I do often wonder what steps would be taken too protect the away end in the event of another derby game, after the mess caused at the checkatrade game a few years back they would want retribution. Personally I would be considering removing everything but the bricks and let them stink with no beer! Mind you I imagine if we ever end up there again we won’t have much of an away end

Football's a funny old game. A couple of months ago, Sunderland's owners were brilliant, progressive and aspirational. Now they've appointed Michael Beale and turned their stadium into St James Park.
You rather suspect that, for all their faults, the Coates family know better than to do this.

Their owners are doing a great job for them 😁

I understand the owners might be batshit crazy BUT what I cant believe is that none of the Sunderland staff raised any concerns with how this might look.
It should never have got this far. It's beyond satire of crazy foreign investors

Local rivalry baffles me
I guess maybe Manchester/Everton etc is different but I really couldn't give a toss about say Port Vale and never have.
Some seem more bothered re local rivals than their own team at times

The other side of it they have pretty much got spot on, and continue to improve.

Lived in Leyton E10 at the time and our neighbors were lesbian Sunderland fans. If they weren’t at each others throats rowing they were consoling themselves with said song.

It’s pathetic.
One of two things has happened here;
Either the owner has known about it for weeks and is now panicking due to the rightful backlash or he’s been done over by a Newcastle based company.
My money is on the former, he’s badly misjudged the local rivalry here.
Still, football fans are fickle. If we somehow beat the oil lads then we’ll likely be loving him again.

I know we haven’t played Newcastle for years, but they’d surely be aware that the rivalry between us and them is very fierce. We’ve now taken the decor down and apparently blocked any of their flags coming into the stadium, but it’s too little too late.

What price crowd trouble tomorrow, partly fuelled by this?

What price crowd trouble tomorrow, partly fuelled by this? Not sure this will fuel any trouble other than a few chants in the ground - will be just as likely to fuel crowd trouble as any anti-Saudi regime chants from our end. As for overall chances of crowd trouble: During the game - little to none. Before/after the game - likely from either side - our lot if we get battered and their lot if they get beat.
