I was really chuffed when Randall scored, such a shame it didn't work out for him at Stoke.
The pitch was terrible wasn't it.

Bourne Sports tracksuits (a retro classic in the making....) and a quagmire pitch
What's not to like!

The wonderful sports journalist Julie Welch reported on this game for the Observer. She noted the condition of the pitch wondering how many Stoke supporters would like to get their hands on the mud and clay to turn it into a beautiful piece of pottery.

Remember it well.. proper roll around in the mud.. was also very moody around Stoke town centre that day..
West Ham bought a big following and even had a few on the Boothen as the match kicked off.. taken out through the Paddock which was never a good idea!
Great memories.. thnx for posting Crouchpotato1..

She noted the condition of the pitch wondering how many Stoke supporters would like to get their hands on the mud and clay to turn it into a beautiful piece of pottery. Which effectively is what the players did that day. The Randall goal is one of my all time favourite memories - I was in the Boothen stand, and initially had sat back in frustration as I thought Parkes had got to the ball first. Then I realised Randall was still running and the ball was at his feet. Beautiful.

Back then we used to drink pre-match in the PMT Club, plenty of West Ham in the Boothen before kick off, they didn't stay long though

John Motson was just warming himself up, for a better pitch and weather conditions… Barcelona 82: Randall Socrates is in here….🙂 Similar angles: /mediaViewer?currentTweet=1628706865075875842¤tTweet=1628706865075875842¤tTweet=1628706865075875842¤tTweet=1628706865075875842¤tTweetUser=rjkelly75¤tTweetUser=rjkelly75¤tTweetUser=rjkelly75¤tTweetUser=rjkelly75

Back then we used to drink pre-match in the PMT Club, plenty of West Ham in the Boothen before kick off, they didn't stay long though Four of us went to the corresponding away game at West Ham earlier in that season, we drew 1-1 with Richardson scoring a late equaliser. In our youthful wisdom we decided to swerve the normal away South Bank terrace and go into the paddock instead, cash on the day turnstiles were always available, big mistake we managed to stay quiet during the game using oddball sign language but when Ricco notched we couldn't help ourselves, we didn't stay long after that lively times.

Remember Randall was being put up with our neighbours in the Westlands (Sneyd Avenue). The daughter was a beauty queen, Miss Teen International or summat like that... Great memories of football around this time... Well life in general, I was 17....🤔☺️😜

Some people prefer pitches like that as well Paul Randall was one who did. His scoring record on the bog of a pitch at Eastville was incredible, whereas away from home he hardly scored at all. I think the old Victoria Ground mud reminded him of home.

They are also connected by the fact both goals featured above were scored against former World Cup winners. Socrates v Italy (Winners in 1934 and 1938) Randall v West Ham* *According to their fans, West Ham won the World Cup in 1966 🙂

I expect West Ham fans got over it as if they have won this game Sunderland not Stoke would have been promoted to 1st Division but not West Ham
Especially as in the following season they won the FA Cup, I wish, beating Arse-anal.at Wembley

I was really chuffed when Randall scored, such a shame it didn't work out for him at Stoke. The pitch was terrible wasn't it. Bloody awful pitch. Some people prefer pitches like that as well In his Biography, A Working Man’s Ballet, the author states that Waddo would get the local fire brigade to soak the pitch regularly before our home games. This suited our play makers during 60s & 70s much to visiting managers anger, typical of him, Waddo would brush off the critics saying that the local river Trent caused a higher water table which resulted in a quagmire of a pitch.
