Just discovered this, might be handy for any veterans about to go out to buy metal polish before the weekend's events, I've never heard of this trick before, fascinating -

Thanks for this vindication of the method. A Chief Ops (M) told me of this method when I was serving on Sheffield in early 90s and have used it ever since. Metal polish, metal cleaning wool and even silver dip cleaners will slowly erode medals to the point of making them unreadable.

So no H.P. Sauce as recommended on Blue Peter? Pretty sure that also works but you run the risk of getting it on the ribbons.

Bloody hell that looks labour intensive, can’t you just drop em in a pint of coke like pennies?

Bloody hell that looks labour intensive, can’t you just drop em in a pint of coke like pennies? Most medals are attached to ribbons. Took me about 5 minutes to clean 2 using this method, one of them was completely black, dunno why only one, thought they'd be made of the same stuff 🤷🏼♂️

I haven’t drank coke since I found out it easily cleans pennies, or indeed snorted it!

I’ve got a medal to attach to my set but it means redoing the set. £8 a medal it will cost me a fortune. It can stay in the box

Impressive. Might work with the UN/NATO medals more than the British service medals. When they are court mounted and overlap they are a pain to get looking like they did when they first come back from the tailors but then they are able to clean them individually before they sew them all together I imagine

Liquid brasso and cotton wool balls The only way Brasso comes in non-liquid form? You learn something every day.

Hand sanitiser is great for cleaning things like car seat covers, it's surprising how well it removes stains.

I don't, I'd left before then, good tip for others tho. I was a bit surprised when I managed to find my medals that one had turned completely black and the other was still silver coloured, they look like the same metal.
