You're talking as if we had a choice at the end of May. We either extended the contracts of players most of the fans agreed in unity were dogshit or we let them go and rebooted the club. Now if you were to criticise the club for allowing us to be in a situation where so many contracts ended all at once I would agree but the man who handled most of these initial deals has already left long ago (Scholes) and again we'd be in a situation where we had players who we deemed were shit on 1 or 2 year deals that we couldn't shift (As it seems Gayle is)

Ex pro’s who have played the game say this amount of players bringing in is ridiculous. I can't work out what our strategy is at times.

There was always likely to be inconsistency for the first half of this season, but the way the manager has set us up with the chopping and changing and reverting to a formation that we didn’t recruit for, has massively contributed to the start to this season being way under par.
Neil has completely shit the bed, and he’s now staring down the barrel of a tough set of fixtures and a very realistic chance he might be out of work in the near future.
He had the opportunity to sign an entire team over the summer. It’s inexcusable for us to be so poor defensively. I still hope we can get some positive results/performances from the tough run we’re about to embark on but I suspect he’s lost his head and knows he’s under pressure, and that’s hardly going to lead to more clear decision making is it?
My only hope (other than he turns it round sharpish) is that our management recruitment mirrors our player recruitment and we don’t end up with a groan inducing appointment.

We’re effectively in a pre- season situation trying to find out who’s who and what’s what and dealing with injuries in a competitive situation. True, som of Neil’s spiel doesn’t match his actions but he truly is on the back foot due to management decisions made earlier down the line. Don’t think a change of manager at the moment is the answer. Bit worried the recruitment man is distancing himself a bit about the players recruited saying Neil endorsed all transfer deals in the summer.

I mean if we do end up sacking Neil there's not much faith in JC to make the appropriate appointment is there? Heavily involved in MoN who started off well and then we all know how that went (Transfer budget he couldn't control but tactics and stubbornness were on him) and now went and poached Neil mid-season, given him the keys to the club and the most significant transfer window we've had since 2018 and then he has to go and sack him 3-4 months afterwards? The requirements of the next manager if we do sack AN in the near future are significantly different than previous ones because you're asking a new man to come in and get a tune out of 18 players who 3/4 didn't know each other existed two months ago in a pretty sharp fashion. He's not going to have the excuse of players needing to gel he's going to be brought in to get results and get us out of the shit pretty quickly, I could be wrong but I'd say the type of managers with the guts to do that aren't generally in abundance for a club of our reputation

You see plenty of clubs at our level end up with little known European appointments who end up doing well. I’ve got no doubt there are some gems available in Germany/Spain etc who would be up to the task. And potentially, if Neil fails, maybe just maybe that would be the catalyst for moving more towards a modern head coach system, as opposed to the manager system that has served us nothing but pain since relegation. We have a transfer team and we seem to be playing moneyball now, so maybe the analytics team will have some input. I know many people aren’t convinced by analytics but I think it’s the way to go, even if the fruits aren’t apparent yet for us.

Also, they didn't really look that gelled to me. They did the needful when we opened acres of space on both flanks and won the game with ... TACTICS! Both the manager and players understood what was happening. AN didn't.

He recruitment profile was a nonsense though we re overloaded with forward players with np championship experience , we have centred backs without physicality and a single 32 year old injury prone left footer and centre forward who has had a career detenonung injury , one we even sent abck after 3 games its been thew worst window in years and my god thats an incredibly difficult bar to achieve

Too many self confessed football boffins on here. I'm genuinely not sure he does. Also, if we'd just signed 4-5 players, we'd have struggled to put 11 men on the field. I know it wasn't obvious on Sunday that we'd actually done that, but it is still a rather basic requirement of Association Football...

Neil needs to revert to basics and play 4-4-2 Until the players get what they are meant to do and know where to play Instead of going down mad Nathan’s list of formations every game
Back to basics please or they will never gel
He’s overthinking it all the time Making wholesale changes at half time in a couple of games is a sign that what he thinks doesn’t work So his info on opposing teams is shit or he doesn’t understand it
Try not to leak goals big man little man up top Only my opinion but he needs to do something just to make sure we are solid
And no I’m not a Neil fan but we can’t keep changing manager all the time But if November comes and we are still shit someone has to come in and have a few weeks with the squad before the January transfer window

Neil needs to revert to basics and play 4-4-2 The game has moved on, and we don’t have the players for it anyway. We’re better equipped for a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, definitely not a back 5 though.

Vidigal, Haks and Wesley are all improvements on what we had, Maaee clearly has potential and Bae and Johnson look promising. Most clubs would have been happy to have signed Pearson and Burger (it may take him time to settle but we should have enough cover), while Travers looks a good addition and we have decent options at right back. We have also laid the basis for a future team with Junior, Jojic, Bae, and even Burger alongside Sidibe, Tezgel and Lowe giving us a set of future options. We shouldn’t write off a lot of good work because of gaps at CB and LB.

However, I do listen to Talk Sport everyday to and from my place of work and out of all the people on there he is comfortably the worst. He can barely string a sentence together and hasn't got a fucking clue what he's talking about half the time. The bloke gets pissed for a living.

Can't disagree with a professional, even so, different formations for different fixtures can't help in moulding a team, or settling players. How Neil must believe it's not an issue is bizarre

I was saying mid window how mad it is all these players in one go. Neil actually touched on the numbers coming in in one presser and said he's not sure why people are suprised. My answer to that statement is because it 'is' a hell of a lot to bring in in one window, did he under estimate the size of the task? I think you do have to take Parlours educated guess over ours, he's been there, he knows how players can take time to gel

Punditry is littered with ex pro's who haven't the first inkling what they're on about despite having played the game for 20-odd years, you just have to watch an episode of Soccer Saturday to see that. There's a lot Neil can be criticised for but I'm not sure the number of players signed is one of them. We needed a completely new squad, we could barely put one out on the pitch given how many players left over the summer.

That's not his fault however anybody looks at it. I do think he's taken the wrong approach though in settling players, there is an argument for early injuries but I can't see an argument for mixing the formation every week, especially early doors. I do believe if results don't turn and he's replaced he'll look back with regret of tinkering early doors

For me, start 4-2-3-1 every week and have a subtle change that can be used to enable two up top without risking the defence. I don't know who would make the best starting XI to enacted to do that, but at least it would be a method that the players and fans could understand.
