You can play in Saudi Arabia and get picked but play in the Championship and you've got no chance. Bizarre. What kind of message does it send out in terms of career ambition and what standards we have as a national team that's what I'm asking.

Don't get the hate for Southgate.
We've got a 100% record so far in this qualifying campaign, in a tricky group - and people still moan their bag off.
His record in major tournaments reads: SF, F, QF. On top of that we reached the SF of the Nation's League in 2019.
A reminder that in the tournaments before he joined, we'd just lost to Iceland in 2016 and failed to make it out of the group stages in 2014.

Aside from the well discussed PR issues with this, it does seem a daft move to me for a couple of other reasons.
Henderson will be 34 by the time the Euros come around. With this in mind Southgate should be trying to work out a way of playing without him now, rather than playing him every game.
By playing him, he’s also setting a dangerous precedent by suggesting it’s fine to be playing in Saudi Arabia, the MLS etc. and to still expect to be picked in the England squad. Given the ridiculous amount of money on offer there, it wouldn’t be a massive surprise for other players to make the move there and still expect to be picked for England.

It's funny you know, I had to wait the first 20 years of my life to see England qualify for a World Cup through the group stages, although in fairness we did win one which I was too young to remember. 1966 in England - Qualified automatically as 'Hosts' 1970 in Mexico - Qualified automatically as 'Holders' 1974 in Germany - Failed to Qualify in a group with Poland and Wales 1978 in Argentina - Failed to Qualify in a group with Italy 1982 in Spain - QUALIFIED!

I'm just not sure he has the mentality to get a team over the line and win something, which- given the players we have now- is a potential waste. I'm also not convinced he can outfox one of the top nations/managers at the business end of a tournament

The one with Lampard's phantom goal which would have made absolutely no difference in a game we were utterly dominated in.

Erm We do Rice, Bellingham, Foden would be the exciting midfield 3 Or Rice, TAA, Bellingham Grealish, Saka, Rashford are exciting players Plus back up like Maddison We have quality attacking fullbacks and a top drawer classy CB in Stones Topped off with one of the best strikers in the world Keeper is nothing special and issues with the other CB's Not perfect but ludicrous to say we don't have exciting players We have some of the most exciting players in the world Henderson is a handy player still, would have Ward Prowse in squad instead but don't think it's a big issue him being there but can see why people are disappointed he appears to be starting

Playing devil's advocate it would have been 2.2 seen multiple games where sides dominate and then an equaliser changes everything Probable Germany would have gone on to win but has to be a fair amount of doubt

He can only pick what's available and so could a replacement! We don't have too many exciting players. We’ve arguably the most exciting team we’ve ever had. If a midfield three of Bellingham, Rice and Foden isn’t exciting, I don’t know what is. Bellingham has the potential to become one of the best players in the world, and he’s not far off that already.

Southgate and his England teams have given me some brilliant memories. I only wish that finances/the thumb I'm under allowed me follow them away. Like his many of his predecessors, he's had an elite group of players to work with. The difference is, Southgate has delivered consistently good performances in both qualification and tournament football with his. Come on England.

He has but fallen short tactically wise when it's come to the huge games. Croatia and Italy I think early goals were a problem in an odd way as tried to sit on them. Completely cocked up the Croatia game and let them boss it, a better manager would have seen that game out and snuffed out their midfield . Italy were always getting back into that game, their tactics were impressive that tournament although it went to pens and and a lottery and had they won,Southgate would have been a genius. Fine lines

Continuing what we discussed on the other thread....😁 Other England managers haven't really had elite players to work with. Not in a global sense... and that's what we're talking about. There's always been decent ones but rarely a truly world elite one.

For as well as he’s done, there’s a nagging feeling that a generation of players who are genuine contenders for trophies is being wasted on him.

Look how that turned out. Did you not enjoy the WC 2018 in Russia? Or the last Euros? Football is about experiences and enjoyment more than it is trophies for me. After all, most Stoke fans have seen us win nothing of any note.
