I don't see why a top 10 finish playing some good stuff wouldn't be a good season in the context of an entire new squad and five years of bottom half finishes? A top 10 finish playing some good stuff would be fairly decent but it shouldn't be what we are aiming for, we've seen what teams that have a decent manager and a few quality players can do in this division so we should be aiming for the plays offs at least. It may be an ambitious target given the turnover of players but we must be bold and go for it this year. If we finished tenth this year I would find it underwhelming but progress, 8th and above very decent, play offs great, automatic promotion fantastic and I would say nigh impossible. I've a feeling though that it will be non of those above and it may be a upper bottom half finish, progress of a sort but certainly not good enough for Neil to keep his job. I hope he and the team will surprise me and prove me wrong because I think we have the players and tools to put a strong challenge in this season but what I've seen the start of this season is the same old flaws in both management and team. Poor safety first set ups, tactical mistakes by Neil against teams that have a plan, a muddled midfield that gets overwhelmed, a defence that still gets caught napping, inconsistency and a failure to put any sort of run together. Saying all that it is early days but I think the next 5 or 6 games may define our season, do reasonably well in them and we may push on and it is crucial we do as we will be nearly a quarter of the way through the season by then. The club will be aiming for promotion and rightly so. What we're aiming for and what we achieve won't necessarily be the same thing, I'm just saying a top 10 finish playing some good stuff would be a marked improvement and something to build on, and therefore a good season in my book. I think we have to be careful not to focus too much on the positives or the negatives alone. I was always expecting some hiccups in the early going. Some of his team selections and changes have been worrying I agree. When he gets it right though we look a good side.

The bulbs are not going to sprout overnight it's as simple as that. The last batch was a bad batch, the new gardener didn't supply them,it's as simple as that. Judge your gardener by the garden he has designed it's not his fault the previous gardnerer planted the plants in the wrong places Unless your gardener can sort me out with some cali imports in fat bags then I'm not too interested. We've allready got some vibrant, colourful, exotic plants in place, they're just in bulb form at the moment

Yeah but it's a hard call not to focus on the positives and negatives alone after the last 6 years, what was the phrase, I'll paraphrase it, when were good we're very good but when we're bad we're beyond bloody awful and I think the lack of any sort of concerted consistency is the bit that nags away at people. I agree with what you're saying, I expect the team will need time to gel and I've been impressed with the majority of the players, yet many of the old flaws still persist and yes when Neil gets it right we look a very good side.

A few of the players we've bought in for the long term flourishing would give us some foundations to build upon and make the case for further patience. Add to that improving our home record, I think I might have attended more home wins than last season already. What should we be aiming for 1st obviously settling for 2nd when first is no longer possible.

What was anyone expecting from him given his record? He's a sub par manager at best thats made a career living off other people's work. Norwich, he inherited a prem team in the championship. The Norwich fans I know all say they went up in spite of tactics not because of them. He got found out massively in the prem. Sunderland, turns up after the window is shut, they bumble their way over the line but he wants to take full credit for it??? Preston where he actually had to do some work was a loop of a couple of random good results followed by abysmal defeats ending in mid table obscurity if they were lucky. His problem is he genuinely thinks he's some sort of tactical genius obsessed with 'out smarting' the opposition rather than than focusing on his own team. Ever since he arrived it's impossible to understand what the game plan is each week and it's painfully obvious the players don't either because he can't stop messing with it. I'm sure the excuse 'the new guys need time to bed in' will be wheeled out but it was exactly the same last season, every week it was like watching a bunch of people who'd never met each other before. For me it's no coincidence the 1 run of good results after Christmas coincided with us only having 11 fit players and him being forced to play a consistent team and tactics for a few weeks. Then as soon as we got a few people fit, he went back to playing at being guardiola and back down the table we went. We would have ended up with more points last season if we'd stuck with O'Neil. Totally agree.Hes been around a while and never pulled up many trees so to speak so think why should things be any different at Stoke. You never know though...

October is an interesting month, we won't get a more difficult month than that this season, the players will have a good 4 games and plenty of days together on the training pitch by then.
I think that month is a good but rough guideline to the success of our summer window and doubts about our manager, and even thats still early season. If we can get through that with 7 to 9 points we've done really well and we have every reason to be optimistic. I'ts far too early to judge anything at this stage unless you simply just dont like the manager and your mind is made

Clough put the team sheet up at 12:30 on a Friday, numbered one to eleven. We all knew , every player knew , exactly what being number 4 meant or being number 7 meant .
If we were number 7 say , we all knew exactly what Clough wanted from his number 7.
There was total clarity.
AN is the anti Bryan Clough .
50 years on every one wants to be resilient without the ball and take calculated gambles in the final third to create some clear cut chances. The basics haven't changed that much. That is always going to be the case.
AN needs to stop trying to be a smart arse .
He needs to give the players clarity.

You're absolutely right. John Coates has hung his hat on AN so we've got to hope it all works out. Averages 1.5 points per game over 450 games. As a rough guide that's 69 points a season over 46 games. Last seasons play off qualifiers qualified with a minimum of 76 points. It's never an exact science but given the signings we've made that look to be decent I think we'll be in the mix, simply because we have what I believe to be good players and a manager that averages 69 points a season. Luck with key players injuries has to play a part in a successful season for any club. Youve also got to factor in that this season in particular we've signed 18 new players, the early games are going to cost points because of this, that's just natual However, you want to look on it if we finished top 8 it's a big improvement.

AN understands the game. Along with Ricky and Jared he has changed the way Stoke operate and he has changed it for the better . He is no one's fool .
But now, the season has kicked off, it's time to get down to the football.
Does he have the bottle and to stick to his plan for getting the best out of his players , when we suffer one or two defeats, get one or two players injured, have a tough away game.
Is he going to be a man with a plan , who believes in his players , or is he going to keep constantly being reactive and endlessly changing things, because Millwall away is going to be physical , Preston will probably play a low block blah blah blah.
Nobody is interested in Millwall and Preston.
Does he believe in himself and his players is what matters .
If he doesn't show absolute believe in himself and his players, everyone, the players, the opposition, his own fans, will smell it a mile off it . It is going to be like watching a nervous new supply teacher, with no believe in himself, drown in an inner city comprehensive.
He has got to show belief in himself and his players.
Or it's ending badly.

Let's see what a full week training, and the additions to squad of Junior and Sead, brings to the table v Norwich. I'm hopeful, but usually this means nothing but incoming despair.

AN is here for the long haul, if we don't go up this season, with the squad we have now, it will only need tweaking, so little money will need to be spent. Tweaking? 2XGK, 2XLB, RB, 2XCB, CF, 2XWide Forwards. Absolute minimum of 9 to stand still. Would this be seen as Alex Neil’s fault if another truck load of players need bringing in? In my view, it just highlights how poor his predecessors did.

In my view, it just highlights how poor his predecessors did. Mate Alex Neil has spent more in one window than our previous 8 windows combined. So if he isn't able to improve the team after getting 8 windows worth of spending in one then that's on him. If you were sitting 4th from bottom during Tony Mowbrays reign then maybe you'd be able to relate. Tony came in and improved what he had. Alex came in and played our top goalscorer as right wing back, who's now been bought by a Premier league side to play as a striker. If Mowbary was playing Ross Stewart as right wing back I'm sure you'd also raise an eyebrow. Let's not forget him saying he'd get promoted by the end of this season too. If the team was so bad then why would he say that and why would he leave Sunderland? Fact of the matter is that there isn't a single player which has improved under Alex Neil and that's very telling as to where the problem lies. My question to you would be - What can Alex Neil be held accountable for? Because it seems that if he fails this season with his record spending that the next batch of excuses are already there. "Clearly needs more players". So how bad does it need to get for Alex to actually be held accountable for anything? Why do you excuse him of all responsibility?

Even on the Oatcake, you can't overstate how poorly we've recruited prior to AN's regime. Realistically, I don't expect all of AN's players to work out.
But I suspect that the ratio of players to wankers will improve. I believe it has begun - haven't seen Imbula Mark2 or Wimmer Mark2 yet thank God. And AN clearly wouldn't have tolerated an idiot like Jese but I'll quit mentioning names now, otherwise our post-traumatic stress of the past 6,7 yrs. will continue to fester.
Was asked this morning "Why in the hell do you support Stoke City out of all the teams...yada yada" I replied, "It's simple - I'm a Gory Hunter!"

I said before the season started that 8th to 10th would be acceptable this season. I still think it would be. We are going to have to replace at least 5 loanees at the end of the season plus plug the all too obvious gaps in our team. So I am not too sure that our "Targeted Recruitment" was actually all that some people make it out to be. And I don't know how anyone could suggest that we won't have to spend big again next June unless we lash out in January. Let's see where we are at Christmas.

In my view, it just highlights how poor his predecessors did. Not at all. Allowing for short term sticking plasters it requires around 50% of his long term signings to be successful which is above average. Some big positions in the squad have nothing more than short term fixes if indeed they do fix anything more than being a body. No reflection on AN or anyone else just a consequence of the scale of the task.

Whether people like it or not, this was a great opportunity that very few managers ever get. Unwanted players out of contract, money available and players going cheap because most clubs had no cash to spend. And in a lot of cases, no option but to allow players to go, as the clubs could no longer afford them. I would expect that AN has still got cash to spend in January if he needs to. Unfortunately AN does not have a great track record for buying players and if last year is anything to judge by,he does not seem to improve players either. What he does have in abundance is persistance. He will tinker around, trying everything, until hopefully, he will find something that works. That's how our leading scorer wound up playing right full. If he fails to find a solution, then it's sign more players and try again. I just hope that he doesn't do everything else before he actually manages to do the right thing.

Seems baffling to me that so many people are losing their head so early in the season. Also, it’s an international break 😂
Middlesbrough, Coventry and WBA made up the bottom 3 in late October last year. It’s a long old season. Let’s not lose our rag now.

I don’t think he is absolutely right, I certainly don’t think we’d have ended up with more points under MON if we’d stuck with him. I also think Marwood is being rather uncharitable in his assessment. Norwich - even if the framing is correct it was a long time ago, it’s possible, probable he’s learned from his experience there and it’s made him a better manager than he was at the time. Preston - ‘where he actually had to do some work’ as Marwood put it consistently had one of the lower budgets in the league, so it can be argued that Neil largely had them over performing during his time there. Sunderland - Neil joined them at a time when their form had nosedived and they had won just one out of 7 games and had been on the end of a decent number of thrashing’s under Johnson. Neil put together an unbeaten 16 game run and got them promoted, describing that turnaround as ‘bumble their way over the line’ seems absurd really.

Seems baffling to me that so many people are losing their head so early in the season. Also, it’s an international break 😂 Middlesbrough, Coventry and WBA made up the bottom 3 in late October last year. It’s a long old season. Let’s not lose our rag now. Was the same last season and the manager was sacked. A loss at Norwich means we'll have had a worse start . Not like Neil has just arrived, the not his team brigade been making that excuse for a year now through poor results but any manager that goes to a new club inherits a team and his job is to work with them not make excuses.

You're absolutely right. John Coates has hung his hat on AN so we've got to hope it all works out. Couldn't agree more, and with the pressure of very large home crowds demanding results after 4 seasons in league 1, shows he can handle the pressure of a big job. People say Stoke is a big job, it's not as big or as much pressure as 40k expecting results, he delivered where others failed, simple as that
