During one of the lockdowns, I started listening to albums from every year since 1960 - top sellers, critically acclaimed, hidden gems and all sorts. That was about 2 years ago I think, and I have about 8 years left - in terms of albums not listening time.   It's been fun, but I'll be kind of glad when it's over. I've kept a list and have a hidden gems playlist with a favourite track from each year.


I'm ranking every year as I go along, and 2003 is my favourite so far, with 1988 my least favourite. My favourite discovery I wish I'd got into much sooner are Black Sabbath - I was disappointed Ozzy Osbourne's dates got cancelled. On the poppier side, I've got into ABBA too. Favourite hidden gem is this blissful folk from Hako Yamasaki:







1950s: Berry Is on Top by Chuck Berry



1960s: Nancy & Lee by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood (discovered and got into loads more I love, including Bobbie Gentry, James Carr, Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick, Irma Thomas, plus some I already liked like Françoise Hardy and Nick Garrie)



1970s: Harvest by Neil Young (tough choice between him and Dark Side of the Moon - so much great stuff in the 70s)



1980s: Doolittle by Pixies (my least favourite decade overall, but still loads of brilliant stuff - the aforementioned Black Sabbath, Ozzy's solo stuff, Kirsty MacColl, ABBA, Pet Shop Boys, Julee Cruise...)



1990s: Yesterday Went Too Soon by Feeder (the first album where I liked every track, and totally responsible for me becoming a music nut. Loads of great stuff including the Britpop (Different Class probably being my favourite), Bjork, Slowdive, Fountains of Wayne, Weezer, Wilco, Mostly Autumn, Teenage Fanclub...I could go on forever)



2000s: The Decline of British Sea Power by British Sea Power



2010s: Shoulders & Giants by Collapse Under the Empire (atmospheric and cinematic post-apocalyptic post-rock)


2020s: The Last Exit by Still Corners (I'm loving Depeche Mode's new album, and the Manics is my favourite of theirs for a while)



I agree with the comment about the Manics being underrated - still releasing top quality albums that are usually amongst my favourites every year. Feeder and Mostly Autumn are two other favourites who've regularly released since the 90s - Mostly Autumn especially with their last 3 albums sound better than ever.

For me breaking it down by decade ends up with fairly unrepresentative picture. Those last 2 wouldn't even be in my Top 100.

I recently had reason to compile a list of my Top 30 albums of all time (excluding The Beatles and the Beach Boys), and 23 of them were from the 70s (guess what decade I was a teenager).

Nevermind sounds dated to me, but I completely get those it affected in a positive way at the time - plus Nirvana in general. Pixies' music has aged much better for me. I think Sugar are well under-listened from that era too - tracks like The Act We Act, JC Auto, The Slim, Panama City Motel etc - and Nirvana or Pixies wouldn't have sounded like they do without Bob Mould's previous band Husker Du. Bob Mould's cracking live too - blisteringly and relentlessly loud even solo electric!

I didn't like Lana Del Rey when she first became popular but checked out Rockwell on my every year odyssey - now I get the fuss. I've learnt Ray of Light's a cracker too - I only knew the singles in the 90s.

And now you mention Abbey Road, that might just be my 60s favourite. Love the R.E.M. album too but not sure it'd make my top 100 either - still, one of those albums that's better than their Best Of compilation.

For a long time now, I've been convinced that Norman Rockwell is the best album of the 21st Century, that is, until very recently, with the release of her latest album, which is equally as stunning and dare I suggest, just maybe (if that was even actually possible) better ...

We all know that Lana is extremely hit and miss live, imho more miss than hit. I've said on here in the past, that you'll get a good Lana show 4 times out of 10 at best, she was born to be a phenomenal songwriter, not a (even) decent live performer.

I think if you buy a ticket for one of her shows, then you have to accept this as the reality. Hence why tickets for her show at Hyde Park this summer, sold faster than for any other artist playing there this summer.
