How long before he unretires?
Some club can always use a moaner in the middle of the pitch, not moving much, but always shouting.
We could use that.

To be still holding down a League One central midfield role at the age of 39 is mightily impressive.
What a player for SCFC. We never replaced the lad.

Played until 39.
Moved down the leagues so that he could still do reasonably.
Impressive commitment to the game.

Absolute machine. Glen was a battler for us.. 150% every game. I hope he can enjoy some down time now, well deserved.

Never let the the Premier League elite bother him one jot. Just got on with his job. An admirable player and character. Hope he has a great retirement - would be suprised if he could stay away from the game.

Him looking after Ramsey while the arse players focussed on the ref is something I'll always remember.
Great lad Glenn.

Proved his doubters wrong consistently, including two managers.

One of my all time favourite players. Many times managers tried to replace him...... still never managed it. remember that last minute goal against spurs LIMBS! "And Whelan scores"

Did he ever get an actual send off or did he just quietly disappear to Villa one summer? I vaguely remember him playing against us after relegation.

Good luck to him, never the most skillful of players but you could never say he did not give all he had. Perhaps the management might take note and look for a player of the same ilk for the next few seasons.

Always gave his all for us, our failure to replace him was arguably one of our biggest reasons for relegation

Here's a little curio. I've just been on the Bristol Rovers board to see what they thought of Glenn and came across their matchday thread, which I lazily searched for the word 'Whelan': gasheads.proboards.com/thread/21054/final-day-bolton-matchday-thread?q=whelanFirstly, a player was substituted at half time due to concussion - first substitution. Then, they brought Whelan off the bench and made him captain - second substitution. Two minutes later, they took off four players including the goalkeeper - substitutions three, four, five and six. They then substituted Whelan off again in the 96th minute so that he could get his standing ovation - a seventh substitution. Apparently concussion subs don't count, but that's still six substitutions. Did the referee just go a bit soft and let Whelan come off because it was full time and absolutely nobody will take any interest in the number of substitutions in an end of season dead rubber in the Third Division?

One of my all time favourite players. Many times managers tried to replace him...... still never managed it. remember that last minute goal against spurs LIMBS! "And Whelan scores" In the 'under the cosh' podcast TP was asked who he had the most respect for in football and he said Whelan. Admitted he tried to replace him a few times but Glenn got better. Happy retirement Glenn.

£ for £ probably our best ever signing No way matey. Steino Banks Fuller Ritchie Greenhoff To name a few... Wild comment. Whelan cost us 500k. If you look at the return on investment in terms of how he performed for us for the price we paid, those you mentioned are not up for comparison. And the fuller shout…. some people need to remove the rose tinted specs.

And the fuller shout…. some people need to remove the rose tinted specs. I think also we need to remove pre 80s players. Football was different back then and players cared for clubs and had loyalties. Perhaps from Steino is fair, but lets be clear here, Whelan is one of our best signings we have ever made.
