His stats for us this season were on the poor side, from what I've seen. He was ok, no better and no worse. It's difficult to understand why Neil blew so much smoke up his arse.. we need better in that position. Yes we do need better than the present incumbent to blow the smoke!

“Thrived” is not the same as always selected. He just does not create chances. Glad he’ll be gone. But he does create chances. Our pathetic strikers do not get in the right position or fluff their chances too often. Not nearly enough in my opinion, and for me that's a primary job of a No 10. Smallbone only has a high press and set pieces to offer in his armoury, and we need more than that.

His free-kicks are hopeless.

All his best performances have been away from home where his running and pressing really comes to the forefront.
At home we need a more traditional number 10, who can unlock a defence or score a 25 yarder, easier said than done granted.
He’s a good player no doubt but definitely replaceable.

Best news of the week was him declaring his desire to return to Southampton.
Thank the lord. There may well be a god afterall.

High pressing is the best way to create chances! Only if someone is there to pick up on a loose ball. Smallbone knows how to get in people’s faces but not quite so adept as following it up with threading a ball through to make a goal-scoring chance.

Somebody’s got it wrong the consensus seems to be he wot be missed and yet the manager thinks he’s sn ever present and is kern to keep the loan players , the chasm between management and supporters grows ever wider . Because we all know far more than the manager does I reckon a "Dream Ticket" would be you and Bayern

Is that a tweet to calm the Soton fans down that think they’re getting the second coming of Zidane? Makes him look like a right mug. Especially with the last sentence 😂

The very definition of “shit” right there. Appalling stats for an attacking midfielder that was on set piece duty for half a season.

I cannot believe that those stats are correct? 5 assists? 3 of them in one match at Sunderland?

Just for balance, Daniel Johnson, who will probably replace Smallbone, has less goals, less assists, less key passes per game and an almost identical pass completion ratio.
Played less minutes though to complete the balance.
If Smallbone has been bad in his first season back after a tough injury, then I don't know how to explain the 'experienced' campaigner...

Neil should know what makes him tick.

He had the workrate that was needed to do well for us. However, his first instinct was always to pass it sideways and backwards.
Honestly, how many players have we said that about in the last 5 seasons?!

The Smallbone experiment has been the worst and most disastrous feature of the season for me.
We have played someone else's player week in and week out with no benefit to us whatsover, so other players have not been given opportunities, or the chance to develop. He was always going to go back to Southampton, and apart from 4 or 5 games has been totally out of his depth.
Now he goes back to Southampton at least knowing how this League works and will probably be more effective in it next season.
