The Park Hotel in Wadsley, Sheffield, is the latest to be asked to impose the rule by senior police officers. Mark Kelly, the landlord said: "Police asked us to ensure that everyone removes headgear. "With pensioners, by the time they sit down their hats always come off anyway because they were brought up with manners so usually take their hats off indoors." the measure, designed to prevent people from obscuring their faces from CCTV cameras, has been questioned by Barnsley's former Test umpire Dickie Bird, 75, well-known for his favoured white flat cap. He said: "Asking a Yorkshireman to take off his flat cap -- whoever heard of anything so silly. "It's a Yorkshire tradition, men wearing flat caps. Although youngsters don't bother these days, older men still wear them and should be allowed to continue. "I still wear a flat cap when I go out shopping and often leave it on when I get home and end up sitting watching TV with my cap on They look smart and they keep your head nice and warm." A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said bans on people wearing headgear in public premises had been operated in banks and post offices for years. She added: "There have been incidents both in pubs and other establishments when it has not been possible to identify offenders captured on CCTV because hats were hiding their faces."

It happened to someone in the old Post Office in Castle the other day, an elderly bloke in a flat cap doing no harm to anybody (and I don't mean Rudgie).

OK - I'll rise to the bait. Do you think that S.Yorkshire Police apply the same rule to women wearing a niqab or men wearing turbans?

OK - I'll rise to the bait. Do you think that S.Yorkshire Police apply the same rule to women wearing a niqab or men wearing turbans? I wasn't dangling any bait It's a good question actually, i have no idea what the rules are regarding muslim head dress, although i doubt you get many muslims in south yorkshire pubs ;D I do wonder where your question comes from, people always seem quick to turn issues into a us and them question about muslims why does it matter ? the fact the rule even exists is ludicrous, who ever it applies to, it's just more evidence that this country has slipped into a full scale police state, they want to micro manage every aspect of your life.

I know you weren't setting any bait - I've read enough of your posts to agree with many of the opinions that you hold.
I wasn't specifically referring to pubs either. I muse over the sign that says that 'motor cycle helmets must be removed' when I walk into my bank. 'Hoodies' banned from shopping centres. I wonder if the same rule applies to those who wish to cover their faces. We can't have a society that operates on double standards purely on the grounds of religion surely? Rules such as these are dividing people.
We should be working towards an inclusive society and certain aspects of 'multi-culturism' will prevent this from happening IMO.

Anyone found out what those 30 barrack blocks in a disused quarry just outside Buxton are all about?
