You can still have attacking full backs in a back four though? Not all attacking full backs are automatically wing backs? That's true but it's incredibly difficult to do well - the teams that pull it off need the best players around to make it work. In our purple patch Hoever was playing as a very attacking fullback but Neil seemed to get cold feet and stopped playing him there. I got the impression he was happier with Sterling at fullback - a player who contributed going forward but is first and foremost a defender. Unless we unearth a Justin/Stacey I suspect our fullbacks will be more like Sterling. I'd be happy with that - I thought Sterling was positive, even if his end product wasn't always the best.

Sterling seemed to just stop going forward for the last half a dozen games whether it was managers instructions or not I don't know? I suspect part of it was he played a lot of games whilst not being 100% fit and was not quite fully at it. An all rounder like Sterling is a good foil for an attacking full back on the opposite side if the manager isn't quite brave enough to go with two.......

He seemed to prefer to play the more stay-at-home Sterling behind Campbell on the left, and that worked well in our better away displays and gave Campbell a bit more freedom, knowing he had him behind him.
If he's going to play Campbell there, rather than the right, it'll be interesting to see if he'd ever consider Tymon there (or if he'd ever play Tymon there full stop?)
Or if the focus will be on more of a defence-minded LB....
He has mentioned bringing in at least one "one v one" dribbler, so how that would change how he thought about Campbell/Brown as starters out wide - and the types he'd then want behind then at full-back, we'll have to see.

I'm guessing he's said this in the Live Q&A that I can't actually find on the shitty Sentinel website.

I'm guessing he's said this in the Live Q&A that I can't actually find on the shitty Sentinel website. Yeah, it is hard to locate - in the comments section Of the making-up-the-numbers lot, Baker's the one I was most expecting to go, just because being pissed off as a senior man getting the odd 5 minutes doesn't help anyone www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-qa-transfer-news-8484169#comments-wrapper-What role do you think Lewis Baker will have after seeming to drop off minutes-wise at the back end of the season? Will he return to the same level he was at in his first six months or so or do you think he would move on if presented with an offer? -I wouldn't be surprised to see Baker move on. I don't think we should turn our noses up at his goal record, I've never known a Stoke midfielder with a more consistent shot from 25 yards or so. But he didn't seem to fit in when Neil got the midfield balance he wanted post-January. He's not here to make up the numbers and be an impact sub. One to watch, I'm sure.

He's just stating the obvious really though isn't he ?
AN clearly doesn't rate him and there's a good chance of a fee based on last seasons performances.

Thats fair Sterling got up the pitch well enough but stats bear out lack of threatening crosses & no goals thought his actual defending was very good indeed factor in he played really well either side & he would have been a cracking signing Hoevre on the other hand looked lost on the left but a real threat on the right, scored four gaols & attacked really well, good on the ball, sees the pass early defensively his positioning was poor > not just being caught out after a foray upfield (a price you have to pay up to a pointy if you are asking your fullbacks to be attacker's) either but is athleticism got him out of trouble a few times bit too one footed really as well you wouldn't want two Hoevres (imho) & you probably wouldn't want 2 Sterlings ideally any full back should be good at both ends but those ones are typically in the p/l already

I thought that Baker looked really poor throughout this season and certainly is not captain material. There is a good player in there somewhere, we saw that when he first arrived, but it is quite evident that AN is not the manager to bring it out of him.

Every interview I've heard with a current squad member always mentions the "great dressing room atmosphere"... so my impression is, it's not toxic but too nice, which is just as bad when it comes to competitive sport. You want that edge and tension around the training ground but in a way that gets the best out of the team. The evidence suggests we have no real winners in the group and if there are any, they're getting dragged down by the rest of the group. Funny that. I heard jack grealish say the same about the man city dressing room at the end of the season. Which bit did he say?

Not Stoke related but I can't see a generic transfer thread, Kovacic is off to Man City would be a great signing for them he'll do really well in their team.........

However many players we sign, and it will need to be quite a few, I would like to see Tezgel and Lowe getting many more minutes in the first team next season

Neil wanted to play a back four but didn't really have the personnel to do it.

Just read a whole suite of clubs are chasing Jerry Yates, with an unknown championship club bidding 2.5 million.
It wouldn't surprise me if that was us

Do you think we will get in 4 or 5 players as soon as the window opens or have to wait longer.

The value signing at Blackpool, and a player I think is really underrated is Shayne Lavery. Not scored many recently but if you dig around it's because he's been punted around the front positions, especially out wide. Is a good size and a good age at 24. Reasonably quick and a solid grafter. Would be well worth a punt as a squad type player if we could shift one or two of the current lot.
