Echo above post by Benji except unfortunately I never got the chance to meet the great man. My all time sporting hero.
RIP Sir Gordon.

I always remember newspaper headlines.
One was "As safe as the Banks of England"
He was the best goalkeeper in the world and he played for Stoke City.
It just seemed ridiculous to me as a 10 year old.

A genuine legend from an era where shameless self-promotion wasn't rewarded. RIP.

My favourite GB story, told to me by Terry Conroy, was after the "Marvellous" film came out, Nello, as he often does, joined the Stoke old boys for a coffee before and after their weekly walk at Trentham. He was sitting next to Gordon when a lady came up and asked if she could have a selfie. Gordon said "of course" but she said, " I didn't mean you, I meant Mr.Baldwin". Such was Gordon's instinctive humility that he just replied "Oh, I'm really sorry, would you like me to take it ?" which he did. TC said she went happily on her way without realising that her photo had been taken by the one of the world's greatest ever goalkeepers !

a true gentleman and sadly never got the gong he deserved
it galls me when i saw the way that Maradonna was held up like a saint when he died, he was a cheating drug abusing scumbag, i know who i would rather young miss flea79 looked up too and aspired to be like in the future! (throw other players of that ilk into the good egg mix too, Sir Stan, Pele etc etc)

Could watch him all day Many people hold Gascoigne in such high regards in England. Was he much better? Certainly not on the same planet football wise I found a copy if Banks' book a few weeks ago signed by him and the author, another great guy and a cheeky note to my Mum mocking her local football team. Didn't Rob used to post on here? Came to the races with Gordon and his wife one day with us and TC and his family . Was good fun . I think was the day we signed Darel Russel and Keith Andrews

I think was the day we signed Darel Russel and Keith Andrews he was a genius player yes, but he was a terrible example to the kids on the pitch, in a similar vein to Gazza and to a certain extent Georgie Best, to my memory i never saw any footage of either of them handballing a goal into the net celebrating it then proceeding to rub our noses in it for the rest of their lives! anyway i digress Banks deserved a knighthood but we know he didnt really need one, he was Sir Gordon to us

Doesn't alter the fact that one was hardly mentioned and Maradona a cheat . I understand they weren't as high profile The physical abuse Maradona took that day never gets a mention either
