Many moons ago, in a different life, I find myself at The Kennedy Center doing sound for Mr Previews press conference for Porgy and Bess. Some of you travel. Some of you know what my business is like…flight from the US, cakes and ale…nice meal, red wine, nap…wake up to land at 7. Straight to work. Flight…Blighty to US…horror story. Land at the time you took off, get from Dulles into DC. Two day recovery period. AP is hustled straight to the venue. Add to the above a crippling case of flu, tired out, limps through his presentation (barely) and is now standing around, waiting, waiting. Waiting. (Again, if you know my job, you know) I don’t usually do this but I thought ‘You have one shot at this Robbo’ Tracks mic cable nearest to the maestro, saunters up… ”Mr Previn, may I please ask you a quick question” Now, all conductors, in my experience, have ‘a look’ and believe me when I tell you there is usually little doubt as to just what they are expressing with said non verbal communication. If I had seen that look early in my life I think I may have considered alternate careers. Some days you just have to own your shit though so, as he opened his mouth to, no doubt question my heritage and, probably, anything else that came to mind I lowered my voice and said ”Was it really as fun working with Eric and Ernie as it looked?” I lived. AP got a question he wasn’t expecting and I got to see pure joy. Sometimes even a blind squirrel eh? |

Not on a Christmas Day but Christmas all the same One of the finest hours of tv ever made! Doesn’t make much sense unless you understand the characters a bit but when you do it’s incredible! Just started west wing again from the start on all4 |
