Might be a long shot, but I wonder if anyone could shed any light for me on the structure of the club in the 1960's...
My dad was, by all accounts a pretty good footballer in his youth, and was with Stoke by the age of 17, somewhere around 1960/1. It must have been what would now be considered the academy I assume. As the family story goes, he was very unlucky in that he suffered a serious knee injury a week before being due to sign a professional contract, which ended any hopes of a career.
He passed away in 2003, so I can't ask him. I remember knowing that he was with Stoke in some capacity, but I'm trying to understand at what level he played for the club.
My uncle seems to remember that there was a Stoke A team, The Reserves and the 1st Team. But I've no idea how accurate that is.
Would anyone be able to shed any light on the structure of the club in the late 50s/early 60s, if there was a Stoke A team, and if so, what it was?
Thanks in advance!

There are people on here who will remember much better than me, so this is an inadequate response. However, my recollection is that there was an A team. I guess it would have been what passed for an Academy, but of the crudest sort. It was common in those days for kids to be taken on by professional clubs on what were called "apprentice terms". I imagine they were paid peanuts, presumably the same as if you were an apprentice plumber/electrician/joiner/etc - and the extent to which clubs looked after them would (I imagine) have been pretty much non-existent. And there was definitely a reserve side, which played in the 60s (and beyond) in the Central League. My dad sometimes used to take us to games at the Vic when the first team was away. Back then it was the quickest way to keep in touch with the first team score, which was announced at half-time and full-time. The internet of its day, you might say...
