Dont know what everyone thinks about God healing but if you are ill in any way then something seems to be happening at Stafford Common. There is a guy there that the churches in stafford have arranged and its basically a healing service every night finishing this sunday. It starts at 19:30 and usually done for 21:30
This sat night is specifically for people with terminal illnesses. No one asks for money or anything and its really good, i normally am very suspicious of such events.
If anyone wants more details pm me

I once saw a program on the GOD channel with a live healing session.. all these people came up pretending to be healed.. It was pretty convincing until one guy came on stange, he had just had teeth replacements, he didnt like them and preyed to got apparently, and his fake teeth turned into gold ones and he loves them.
Makes me laugh

I think religion should have the mickey taken out of it at every opportunity!
It makes me chuckle how believers are so quick to reinforce their beliefs with even the most tenuous bit of "evidence" such as apparent healing, yet at the same time quite happy to dismiss or ignore factual happenings which would tend to point to an absence of any God...
Such as: 1. Iranian earthquake on Boxing Day 2004 of all days which killed tens of thousands. 2. Tsunami on Boxing Day (again) 2005 which killed hundreds of thousands. 3. Hurricane Katrine killing hundresd of God-fearing Americans in the US south 4. Burmese typhoon killing tens of thousands 2008 5. Chinese earthquake killing tens of thousands 2008
All these natural events took place on a planet made by God if you believe that stuff. He's either not very good at planet-making or designed it that way to kill thousands of innocent men women and children on a regular basis in which case, not much of a loving God is he?
And while I'm on, you'd think he'd have listened to the millions of prayers asking for a safe return for Madeleine McCann wouldn't you?
I look forward to the christians' smitings! Forgive me surely?!

That's where you're wrong beagriestache. Christians believe that God is all loving, all knowing and all powerful, however he has given them the choice to do what we please and to live their own lives, rather than intervening every time something goes wrong.

Bob Cherry. If you get killed by an earthquake or a Tsunami you didn't have much choice in the matter! And those events were nobody's fault either - although some human actions could have lessened the death toll by better building regulations/standards etc.

I'm not denying anyone their belief, just pointing out what I consider to be the obvious.
Bob Cherry, so why does God stand back and allow innocents to be killed in entirely natural disaters if he's a considerate being?

As I said, as Christians believe, God made the earth and people on it and then let us get on with our own lives and our own choices. It's a difficult one to fathom. How can God be all powerful but do nothing in these situations, how can he be all knowing but doesn't prevent such disasters from happening, and how can he be all loving if he lets people suffer. The inconsistant triad it's known as. Mass is over, go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

Bob, if we are left to get on with our lives with no input from God then why do Christians bother praying to God?
I still don't see that a Tsunami or an earthquake gives the victims any choice at all in the matter.

beagriestache - like you I think all religions should have the mickey taken out of them.
However, I am a christian and those who of us have a genuine belief, including muslims, jews, sikhs, buddhists, hindus and whosoever else (forgive me if I missed your particular group) should feel free to express our faith opinions without riducule.
I appreciate you haven't attacked anyone in particular, and that's to your credit, but there are a great many unexplained phenomena which some would attribute to the supernatural - a term merely hijacked by the "ghosthunter brigade" - which means literally, beyond the natural.
Some of us believe this to be spiritual.
I have no idea what caused the various disasters mentioned above, but Bob Cherry is right, we believe the Earth was perfect until mankind corrupted it. God even gave us free choice about whether we followed Him or not.
You cannot deny, my friend, that since we've become more secular, the world has become far more sullied and unpleasant.
I've witnessed genuine healings, not many, but enough to convince me that miracles are real happenings. Instead of knocking the healers, why not go and witness first hand? If you then retain the same view you have now, you can at least pontificate from a position of strength.
I won't smite you, nor should anyone. You've merely expressed your opinion, and in a gently teasing manner rather than outright abuse. I respect that, and you.
I leave you with this one thought to ponder upon - christianity is the only faith that exists for the benefit of its non-members as well as its adherents.

Surely, Alan, Buddism can make the same claim?

What a restrained and respectful reply, Anarchicalan, nice to see and thanks. You won't be surprised to read that I disagree The evidence is very slim at best to support the existence of a god. You cite some healings which you have witnessed but what does this prove other than the person was healed? It doesn't necessarily follow that this is the work of a god. On the other hand, natural disasters wiping out innocent victims (i.e. nothing to do with human wickedness) would point at the very least to a God who clearly gives less than a monkey's about several thousand people and their loved one's lives. I am prepared to accept the existence of a god but based on what I see occurring around me on a regular basis (earthquakes etc) I would regard God as a scientist conducting a dispassionate experiment on this planet, standing back and observing his handiwork, which doesn't sit very comfortably with the christian viewpoint. Almost forgot - the world is a worse place since it has become more secular you say. Religion has started more wars than any other cause. George W Bush is "God's voice in the White House" - his words, yet he routinely signed execution warrants as governor of Texas (Thou shalt not kill); launched an attack on Iraq which has killed thousands etc etc. The Crusades, Jihad, Northern Ireland, the list is endless. You might argue that these individuals are not real christians, muslims whatever. But they are in their eyes and religion is all about interpreting the message as you see fit, hence the hundreds of religious factions. I genuinely wish you all the best Alan, I'm sure we'd have a good laugh discussing this over a pint (assuming you drink!)

People who deny the existence of God use scientific reasoning to do so...if God exists where is He? etc How did He make the earth? etc etc
But not everything can be explained scientifically...for example what is the square root of minus one?
There is no anwser - because the question cannot be anwsered by mathematical formulation
Now this does not mean God exists - but neither does it mean that it doesn't
It depends of course on how you define God
Healing may or may not work and may or may not be verifiable by scientific reasoning - but that doesn't rule it out 100 per-cent
If God is within and we believe this - then He exists and if we don't then he probably doesn't
Note the probable not the absolute
Now what was the question again?

Wow, you twist and turn like a twisty turny thing!
I've no complaints with anyone wanting to believe as I said earlier, I just like to point out all the inconsistencies of belief systems such as the impotence of prayer (e.g Madeleine McCann's safe return - how many prayer hours have been spent on that) which doesn't seem to stop people praying?

Religion itself has caused NO wars - ever.
Hijacking a religion for personal gain - Spanish Inquisition, the corrupt papacy (not always, but there are several examples over the centuries), Iran, Iraq, jihad(s), fatwa(s), Northern Ireland, Henry VIII's assumption to the "head of the church" (creating the C of E), Cromwell, the excommunication of Martin Luther after he published the 39 articles, and many many more examples - that is the reason for many wars, conflicts, tyranny and so on.
Religion is merely a word meaning a set of rules to follow.
I'm not religious, hopefully I never will be.
I follow a way of life, and I would never claim to be its best example, but I know - not merely believe - that there is a power beyond that which we understand and it's a spiritual experience, not a physical one.
I'm a rational man, many years working in computing, a maths whizz, a logistician, yet I believe in God. I fully understand your point of view and you provide excellent argument for holding it, yet you cannot explain why so many people just like me - including doctors, scientists (of all religions) and the like - have faith in God.
Science, for all its wonders, is in grave danger of becoming its own God.
I do respect atheists slightly more than agnostics. At least you're determined in your views.
Fornside - Whilst I respect all buddhists and admire their peaceful existence with the natural world, Buddhism doesn't exist for the benefit of its non-members.
No buddhist prays for your salvation as far as I'm aware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Fred Zep - (what a great name hahaha) - since WWI, there have been very few years without a war somewhere in the world. This has coincided with a rise in materialsim, greed and personal promotion, ignoring the needs of the wider world, the poor, the environment and the overall wellbeing of mankind.

That's where you're wrong beagriestache. Christians believe that God is all loving, all knowing and all powerful, however he has given them the choice to do what we please and to live their own lives, rather than intervening every time something goes wrong. That stereotype could be far off from the truth, in our society we are forced that view upon us, if there is a God it may be a lot different to that. If anybody is familiar with the invisible gardener story it also oes to show that there is no way of disproving God, no matter how unlikely it may seem, it also shows the changiong goalposts from Christian and other religions. Basing a lot of Christianity on a weak foundation.

Some interesting posts!!
I've never seen or been to Japan...does that mean it doesn't exist?
It's people who start wars and use religion to justify their actions...
That's the usual line of reasoning...
BUT if nobody believed in God - then that would not be possible
Does that mean that without God - there would be no wars?
Of course not, because people would use some other excuse to attempt to legitimise their actions
And remember what Dr Johnson once said;
"The problem with people who renounce religion - is that they replace it with something even more ridiculous"
Does that mean God exists?
It depends on how you define GOD
And what assumptions you base your hypothesis of that definition on
Does that clear things up?
