Some honesty at last we saw that in the game we saw him play in , as opposed to the weasels 25 times baloney. If anything, I’ve always felt like MON provides a lot more insight into the day to day of the club, and is a lot more forthcoming with his thoughts on what is going on, than many other managers we’ve had over the years.

Sensible thoughts there from the manager. I wonder how the comments/thoughts will be dissected and twisted to suit the opinions of some?

Sorry it just sounds like muddled thinking to me. Of course you need some flexibility and there will be times when you need to go horses for courses, but we really need an identity and to try and settle on what kind of team we want to be. That was part of the problem in that awful run in the spring.
Just decide how you want to play and focus your recruitment, your development etc on that.

Whatever system he plays i hope we clear the ball a lot quicker than last season , the amount of times we pi55ed about with the ball last season at the back putting us under self inflicted pressure was shear madness . However with Flint playing i don't think they will because that is not his game and the lad will get rid

I bet you’re the type that screams blue murder down the match if we complete more than 4 passes without getting it in their box.

The most frustrating thing for me at the moment is the lack of any identity whatsoever. If someone asked me how we play, I wouldn't know what to say, other than the majority of the time were boring af to watch.

Most teams have a general plan and can change if needed but it doesn’t happen that often.
Of course you’ve got to have some flexibility but generally you should have your way of playing and stick to that.

I agree - it's better to pick a formation and build your squad to suit rather than try to build a squad to cover all options. I think you are right about the flip flopping after Xmas was a big part of are drop in form after Xmas. We should have stuck with 5 at the back. I think we are at a bit of a cross roads at the moment in terms of squad building and we could build for 5 at the back or 4. I don't particularly mind which but I'd rather we had a plan and stuck to it.

Moving the ball quicker instead of pissing around with it at the back doesn't mean just twatting it It was awful to watch last season and the season before, we don't have the players for it and its pretty easy for the oppo to get back into shape etc, the lack of pace in our play has been a big problem under MON.

I agree we need to move the ball quicker but we have shown we are capable of it, we score some great team goals last season. We just need to get better at it and be capable of it for much longer periods.
The issue we have is our Neanderthal fan base that screams for it to be launched forwards aimlessly, there’s still a very vocal proportion of our fans at home and it’s fucking embarrassing and adds unnecessary pressure on to the players.
I’d much rather us be patient and wait and work for our openings and like I said above this does require us to move the ball quicker at times and for more movement but this will come and hopefully with the emphasis on a more athletic side we will see this.
Trying to make the mongy Stoke fans understand this is akin to hitting your head against a brick wall though.

Trying to make the mongy Stoke fans understand this is akin to hitting your head against a brick wall though. Moving it quickly along the ground, rather than putting it up in the air (Unless you have a Rory launching throw-in missiles) is much lower risk for losing the ball and it keeps the ball down in an area where it could possibly, just maybe, hopefully one day, get kicked into the goal? But I'm no expert, just enjoyed watching Real Madrid and teams like that come down the field with the ball - they looked kind of like a basketball team (Including an idea with what to DO with the ball once near goal) running set plays. (Players like Benzema etc. kind of help too!) Also agree that we've shown flashes of quickness at times. As far as fans go, most professional athletes "zone that out" because hopefully, their focus is on the field rather than some loudmouth sitting several rows up bellowing and threatening to barbeque them on the Oatcake after the game if they don't "hoof it." But I would imagine that it's extremely irritating to hear from fellow fans in the stands! Totally agree with the patient angling for openings, switching the ball over from one side of the pitch to another, going for quality openings rather than "kick and duck." And QUICK ball movement as well as quick off the ball movement would be nice. We need to strive to do everything with pace, which doesn't give teams time to react as quickly. Hope they really work on passing and ball-handling this summer.

I agree with the zoning out comment but when there’s constant moans and groans that are quite audible from the pitch, it’s not a great look. Ben Wilmot has mentioned that the players do feel a greater pressure at home than they do away as they feel every bad touch, or misplaced pass is instantly jumped on by the fans and that filters through to the players.

MoN as his way of playing and tends to stick to it ,start the season off on the front foot playing mostly attacking football until he shits himself and goes all negative dull crap and we lose most home games 🤷♂️

I'm no football expert by any stretch of the imagination but when I see the manager say "the ability to change between a back three and back four is not that different", it does seems a bit odd.
I've always seen these a a good bit different in the roles for the wide players especially and also for the center backs.
Someone help me out here!!??

I thought he was saying it depended on the players you pick which would be slightly different for the two systems for example Tommy Smith should never have been picked in a back 4 and obviously outright wide players do not really fit into a 5 at the back. I didn't think he was saying a lot different from the things he said last year. It seems he's saying that for the rest of the window he'll be looking at quality players to bring in rather than players to fit a system

In today's game you need to be able to adapt and the piece states that. You need options back 4, 3 at the back with wing backs or 2 at the back with wings back, if you have a holding midfielder just in front the back line is another option. Tactics changes if you playing at home the emphasis is to attack, away to be more defensive, this change's on how the opposition set up. Thats what training and scouting is for. would not have expected anything other than what is said, we will change depending on opposition and player availability.

I agree if money is no object and you can afford a big squad of good quality players of the same standard. However we aren't in that position - we can only afford a small squad and we'd be better off having a players who can slot into a preferred formation. Certainly change it during the game when needed but flexibility costs and at the moment we can't afford it.

It's not that simple...if you are playing a side that presses high and does it well, then you have to go long and move the ball quickly out of defence and up the pitch I was watching man city v Liverpool and before the game they ask Rafa benitez in the studio ... Liverpool arw so good at the high press ,do you think Pep will change his tactics and go long ? Benitez...he is going to have to , it's suicide to knock the ball around at the back against a team playing a high press , who know what they are doing , you are going to get caught out sooner or later 90 mins later man city have hit more long balls than any game all season, , had their lowest pass completion all season AND WON ! If long ball wins , long ball it is, even if you are pep

Not sure I agree with that strategy but I guess the quote makes more sense. Rather see a defined system 90% of the time and have the best players for that role and system. Always been a person (in all sports) who thought, know what you need to do and do it better than anyone else, is the way to go.
