He’s no fucking Mark Stein anyway. Took Stenio six games to score…… Let's hope he's no John Tudor either....

Agreed. But his hold up play was mostly shite Not really capable of winning headers either it seems. Looked like he was another one like Brown, who prefers to back into the centre back and hope that an experienced defender somehow misses their bread and butter header.

I thought I’d watch Sunderland till I Die again. Josh comes off the bench (aged 19 from the Academy) in episode 4 and scores on his debut.

Glad it’s not just me who thought his general play was nothing to get excited about. To put things into context Brown’s cameo was better. All for giving a new player a chance and the lad looks like he can finish. We’ll still need a Fletcher replacement/upgrade in the Summer even if it’s just for a plan B or even C or D.

Steadied himself nicely before scoring a goal even with a man on him, good sign of a composed finisher

Agreed. But his hold up play was mostly shite Jesus. The hardest thing to do in football is score goals. He looks like he can do that you are moaning about his hold up play. First game in a new team and he scores and we win. Why have you got to be so negative about him?

I don't remember Michael Owen or jermaine defoe being great at hold up play, but knew where the onion bag was.

I think that depends on his attitude to adapting his game. When he went to Bordeaux, they said all he did was shoot. They coached him to defend more from the front and he did pretty well at that to be honest. He’s only 5’11” though, so perhaps he’s not going to win many aerial duels against a centre back on the half way line? Very happy he scored so soon. It must have been a bit of a shock to be granted a 1 on 1 inside the box after their defender fell over. He composed himself really well for it.

I bet most players' general play would not be overwhelming if they had played a grand total of 45 minutes of first team football since August. Give him time to get up to match fitness and I am sure we will all be more impressed. I was quite surprised at how composed he was for his goal given his lack of match fitness.

According to my friend of nearly 50 years most of which as a Sunderland fan, Maja will score when given half a chance in the box, which he confirmed yesterday. Unfortunately he is held back by the fact he is painfully slow at everything else, which is likely to be interpreted by many Stoke fans as lazy. It sounds as though he’s an old-fashioned poacher like Jimmy Greaves, Gert Mueller, Roger Hunt and Dennis Law who did very little else except score goals on a regular basis. Unfortunately today’s fans expect more. Jacob Brown suffers from the same problem, he’s our top scorer but still gets stick because he’s not perfect at everything else despite working his butt off. He’s on track to score 15 goals this season but still has his detractors. I predict Maja will score 7 or 8 goals and suffer the same fate. He’s on loan and and we have chance to sign him “permanently” but he’ll look elsewhere if the fans get on his back.

We now have defenders who can pass to feet to forwards who drop between the lines. I think Maja looked really good, can clearly control a ball, and will thrive alongside Campbell/Brown/DWP/JPB.

Absolutely, just trying to provide an observation that I think people are going overboard about his performance. We’ll still need to replace Fletcher for that target man battering ram type option. Every squad should have one even if that’s not how they’d prefer to play. Same as the physical DM argument, there just isn’t a sensible argument for not having one on the books.
