That defeats the purpose of competition. If Bursik knows he’s No. 1 no matter what, he’ll rest on his laurels. And what if Davies works hard in training, works on his shortcomings and is ready to take a chance if Bursik starts making mistakes. As it stands, Bursik deserves another crack but he needs to keep his nose clean. Peter Schmeichel came out last week and said chopping and changing gk's is detrimental to their form criticising Solskjaer for swapping deGea and Henderson last year resulting in both of them losing form. I totally agree that a goalkeeper needs to know that he can play his game without worrying about losing his place in the team. I think Bursik's mistake against Derby may have come about because he was caught in two minds rather than trusting his instinct. If you look at his form last season it was best when the only competition was Blondie who realistically was only an emergency cover. His kicking and distribution was much better then and his general demeanour was far more confident. Once Davies was fit again mistakes crept into Bursik's game which many thought was an indication that he needed a rest but I thought then that he didn't like having an experienced gk on the bench. As you can only play one gk I think dropping them for one mistake is harsh. You also have to consider the defence who need to know a gk's game and what he is going to do which can't happen if you chop and change. As for tomorrow's match I would normally agree that the second choice should get the game but for the reasons above and the fact Bursik only came back on Saturday I would leave him there. (Unless you want to save him from conceding a hateful of goals which is possible given Brentford's current form). Peter Schmeichel came out last week ? I missed that one, surprised wasn't bigger news

Sunderland through. If we can fluke our way past Brentford we might have a chance if we then draw Sunderland in the QF's, although you just know we'd find a way to lose that one if we did! If we win tonight we’ll definitely get Chelsea or Arsenal away

Bursik Duhaney Ostigard Souttar Wilmot Doughty Thompson Allen Porter Fletcher Campbell Decent except for Allen. Although I'm not sure who we would replace him with. IMO Allen, though he made a few errors, was in his best position in front of defence and appeared to be playing in one area instead of trying cover every blade of grass, so for me that is his best position which kicked us off to a good start and as such should be given that role every game again!!

Sorry you can't do that. Bayern has block booked MOTM for the rest of the season and 80% of this board's disk space has already been set aside for him to explain why it's Campbell.

Bit of a tonking on the cards here if they show up properly. But it's a funny old game. Presume it's not on the telly? ESPN+ in The States.

I cant get excited for this game at all, I think we need to concentrate on the league and not rack up more games.

I cant get excited for this game at all, I think we need to concentrate on the league and not rack up more games. I'd agree with you if we stick to the same first team for league and cup games but that isn't happening. O'Neill has always said he wanted a smaller squad where everyone is in contention for a first team place. Cup games have proved very useful in giving players not in the first team an opportunity to prove themselves and keep the first team on their toes and it's worked - several players have been given chances in league games on the back of good performances in the cup. The gap between the first and second string isn't that great and against Watford we played pretty much a second team and still won. Providing we continue to use the squad this way the more cup games the better as it maintains the competition for places. In addition at the moment we have players like Sima, Campbell, Fletcher, Duhaney and Doughty coming back from injuries or illness and need a competitive run out and the cup games are ideal. The league clearly is the priority but the cup games are actually helping rather than being a problem.

Davies Ostigard Souttar Wilmott Smith Thompson Sawyers Vrancic Dougherty Fletcher Campbell That line up looks decent on paper. However the biggest problem we have is the midfield balance again. No way can Sawyers and Vrancic play in same midfield unless we have two sitting midfielders. That means one striker. We don’t have the one striker who enables us to play like that. Two up top means two sitting midfielders or as we have seen every time midfielder gets walked through.

Pick our strongest team and go for it. Problem is MON. Doesn’t know the best formation for the players he has - midfield!

From The Grauniad: "Leicester host Brighton in what was a third-division fixture just 11 years ago; and 1935-36’s fourth-best team in the country, Stoke, welcome Brentford, who finished just one place below them that year in the First Division."
