I thought he’d declare a bit earlier tbh but only a few overs before.
3 reasons
Their spinner was getting really good turn and bounce.
The new ball was swinging.
The weather.

Sky usually have the rights to home series’ and BT the away ones so you’re probably right Dees

Two lefties in and it’s spinning….we should be bowling Root?

Building up to be an exciting last day run chase which I'm sure England will thoroughly enjoy.
The pitch gets easier so even 200-300 on the last day is possible with this lot. Should be a fun conclusion.

Surprised we enforced the follow-on, the pitch had clearly flattened out and the only way New Zealand could get back into the game was by batting again and giving us something to chase.

Yeah it seemed the high risk option, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just as simple as McCullum and Stokes making it interesting by us having to chase down a total…..

Either that or they got cocky and thought they could win it today.

Yep I thought the same. Still in the driving seat but we’ve given them hope rather than shutting the door on them by giving them 600+ to chase. That said I like the way we’re playing with supreme confidence and taking gambles just like the Aussies do.

We will roll them over and chase 100 in 12 overs😉

The commentators talked about the follow on last night. This pitch always gets flatter and easier to bat on apparently, so the decision to enforce the follow on was based on getting the remaining life out of it while NZ were batting in their second innings, rather than giving that bowling advantage to NZ then allowing them to have the best of the batting in a final innings run chase.
So it makes sense, even if three down with the scores almost level is a bit short of where England would have liked to be, five down as a minimum would've been their aim.
NZ will probably grind out a 100 lead relatively safely and then try to accelerate, setting England 200+ to chase on the final day. After all they have to win the match or lose the series. Should be a good conclusion.

Being the eternal pessimist, I wonder how many teams have lost a Test Match after declaring in the first innings?

Being the eternal pessimist, I wonder how many teams have lost a Test Match after declaring in the first innings? This would be the first time England have lost a test after following on and the first time NZ have won one. The way England are playing you'd fancy them to knock them off.

I watched the entire days play this morning after recording it and couldn't for the life of me see New Zealand collapsing in the way they did. I also didn't expect Zak Crawley to get as many as he did considering he's an absolute car crash of an opening batsman most of the time. Surely McCullum is just picking him for his own amusement at this point?!.. anyway, I'm assuming we'll knock off these runs relatively comfortably.

I was surprised to see that Crawley is only 25 (& Brook is 24). He’s been around for a long time and other players have not had the same selection perseverance that he’s received. They must see something that we don’t.

They must see something that we don’t. Rob Key does, not sure about anyone else. He’s his “project”. Trouble is there’s such a dearth of openers coming through from the counties what can you do? I mean Duckett is currently opening, 12 months ago that would have been unfathomable. Does Hameed get another shot, I think he’s looked terrible. Does Johnny Bairstow come in as opener with the brand we’re trying to play or even Hales? Answers on a postcard

Followed by horrible shot from Duckett. Oh dear.

This is farcical from England. Our danger man out without facing a ball. We’ve been shocking.
Root, Stokes and Foakes need to knock these off, the tail won’t wag……

England have come out like a pub side.
A pub side who think they can beat anyone in the world by turning up.
Pure arrogance really.

England have come out like a pub side. A pub side who think they can beat anyone in the world by turning up. Pure arrogance really. It does smack of a bit of arrogance and believing the hype to be fair. Win or lose there are still question marks around Pope, massive questions marks around Crawley and the second innings showed that despite their heroics it’s still an ask to bowl Broad and Anderson in back to back tests and/or on flat wickets (as per the 2nd innings). To trouble the Aussies we need at least one of Archer/Wood and the length of the tail still worries me particularly as we’ll be more susceptible to the odd collapse……

Robinson's shot set the tone.
His mind should have been focussed on batting through Southee's initial spell but played an idiotic slog, trying to yank a pull shot from a ball a yard outside off stump. No excuse for that.

England have been woeful since bowling New Zealand out in the first innings.
Enforcing the follow on was just stupid and this first hour today is some of the worst cricket we’ve played in years.
A defeat here might not be the worst result before the Ashes, looks like one or two are in need of a bit of a reality check.

Scandalous that we have lost this. We probably will lose but you've jumped the gun a bit there. Root and Stokes are who you'd want at the crease in this situation.. just got to hope it lasts.
