Always good to remember, the Tories very recently voted against a windfall tax on the energy companies.

This country is a fucking sick joke. U Now I totally get why people piss off abroad, I didn’t used to understand it but now I do. There’s absolutely no reason for this, the 5th richest nation on earth apparently but a large majority of its residents can’t afford to heat their homes or eat properly. Place is a cesspit. We've been seriously considering moving abroad for a while now as we've not really got any close family ties in the U.K. anymore and have been looking into all the positives and pitfalls of life in the sun. Value for money property-wise it's a no brainer. I guess the main problem is having the guts to take the plunge and actually do it. Same here Deeside…had the opportunity to move to Florida about 15 years ago…got family out there with their own business…I was was offered work and the rental of one my Uncles houses. Me and the wife had a good talk about it…my kids were 12 and 3 at the time…but my wife couldn’t get her head around being so far away from her elderly father…who is still going strong today thankfully. But only a few weeks ago my wife totally out of the blue said” when we retire in a few years I’d like to get out of this country…it’s getting crappier by the week”. Don’t know if we’ll do it…I would go tomorrow, but where to ? Everywhere seems in a mess at the moment.

Totally agree but nothing will change because the population is so apathetic. We just take shit after shit…so our leaders keep giving us more shit…and then laugh at us. Not until mass protests are seen on the streets will anything change for the better in the UK. I predict these protests will start around about September or October…people will have had their holidays etc but the cost of living and winter energy prices have hit home and people will realise how much of a mess we are in. Unfortunately it’s the only thing Governments listen to.

Maybe just a handful of people late on a Sunday holding polite placards that should make them sit up and listen. What this country needs is the modern day equivalent of the poll tax riots, it's time to give the establishment a bloody nose.........

Surely an energy cap that keeps going up isn’t a cap?

Surely an energy cap that keeps going up isn’t a cap? There is no cap on high your bill can go. The £2800 price cap quoted above is wrong, the only cap is on the price per Kilowatt they can charge you.

Yes, I know the energy bills have increased since the pandemic, since the war in Ukraine or whatever they blame for it.
But I must say the food prices bother me more here in Sweden!
Last week our largest store increased the price on onions per kilo from 9 SEK (£0.7) to 100 SEK (£7.7)!
😳

Are you saying the price per kilowatt is capped but it keeps going up? That’s surely not a cap? There's a cap on the amount you can be billed for standing charges and as the poster said a cap on the kilowatt rate they can charge you, there's no cap on what you pay as that in part is down to usage. The bit that is capped used to change every 6 or 12 months but because of wholesale prices its now every 3 months.

Absolutely rancid. This can't go on any longer, can it? We can't keep getting told prices are going up because of the war in Ukraine. These companies are making billions in profits. There can be no reason to keep putting prices up. Sunak promises us £600 help in October which is a pisstake in itself. "Here's £600 to give straight back to the companies that are rinsing you for your gas and electric in the first place". None of it makes any sense. Fuel prices rocketing every day. This Government is the absolute pits.

Put a meter reading into Eon yesterday after my last one a month ago in which time I’d spent a total of 1 day and night at home. One day and night out of 28, where I used zero gas and standby electric (fridge is the only thing I can think of). They came back with £80, I’ve not used a fivers worth!!

This Government is the absolute pits. The papers were ramping up discontent between workers and those claiming pensions and to a degree I can see where they’re coming from. Working class are getting hammered and we’re expected to keep taking it on the chin, things are simmering and a long hot summer tends to turn things nasty, Boris has certainly got big problems coming his way

The charge for the month may not be the cost for your actual usage. Most monthly bills are calculated on estimated annual usage, meaning your summer bills are much higher than usage while winter bills much lower. You should be able to see actual costs on your bill, although how clear that is depends on your supplier. I’m now with Octopus whose bills are excellent - very clear explaining what I’ve used and what I’m paying. I was previously with Scottish Power who were, to put it mildly, less clear. I’m very pleased I switched last year.

One other thing these energy companies have capitalised on is to increase the leaving fee. My previous dual fuel contract ended in April, and there were £0 leaving fees if I'd wanted to switch to another supplier at any time. My new contract states the leaving fees are now £200 each for gas and electric.
We're being absolutely shafted from every angle.

Yesterday I received my gas & electricity bill for the last month £136.43 ! We've used hardly any gas, and only used electricity for daily showers, washing machine (twice a week), kettle, T.V. and a couple of other small items. I checked my old bills and this time last year it was £74.23 !

What can we do about the rising energy bills?
One suggestion I heard is to apply a progressive tax rather than a blanket vat rate and hidden green taxes.
Meaning, the first £1,000 (say) is free.
Tax of 10% applies to the next break to £2,000
Tax of 20% applies to usage over £2,000
I reckon this is worth a look.

Does anybody on here have solar panels on their roof, and if so is it cost effective having them installed. We've got a full south facing back garden and get plenty of sunlight most of the day so I reckon they'd produce a lot of energy.

Deeside 2 - there's a load of info on Money Saving Expert website and a calculator you can use for seeing cost payback of solar panels. Seems its 14-24 year payback.

From what I’ve read you don’t see any savings for a number of years, then little return afterwards. They’re also very expensive to purchase I believe, could be entirely wrong but the house down the road they’ve had theirs removed recently.

We have a multi fuel burner in the lounge that will provide heat for all the bungalow in winter. It’s advantage for us is that fuel is already paid for at point of use. However cost of logs and coal have sky rocketed, last year was paying £90 for a load for logs (a load is a LWB flatbed Land Rover) and £7.49 for 25kg of smokeless coal. I’ve just topped up with 2 loads of logs as we intend using the fire much more than gas central heating. This was £240 delivered, the farmer who delivered said diesel cost was crippling him and even red diesel for on farm machinery has gone up to 125ppl from 70ppl last year. I’ve ordered smokeless coal and that’s increased from £7.49 to £10.20. All suppliers are saying that 25% of coal comes from Ukraine hence the increase..So far it’s cost us around £400 to top up when last year it was £250. We have a bunker full of coal from last year so that will help. We still need gas for hot water but central heating will be used frugally in mornings before fire is lit.
