Interestingly this has just cropped up on Thames TV YouTube channel - The Demise of Department Stores from 1982.
Convenience/accessibility was a big factor then as it is now (not that anyone in the video would have dreamt of online shopping 40 years ago!)

The writing was on the wall for this M&S when Wolly was built. It would have been different if it was just a "quick food" place but it isn't. The council(s) are to blame for this one I'm afraid. They expect people to hack through traffic, speed cameras and bus lanes only to be met by a parking meter - further expecting them to shovel pound coins in for the privilege of buying your own goods. That worked 20 years ago when we had no choice, but now we do, and these archaic ways of getting stuff to us are being very rapidly found out. Allowing a similar store to be built with many more traffic advantages than it's rival meant only one answer was going to happen.
Hanley could have reinvented how things were done a long time ago, it's too late now. It's over and Hanley needs to be redeveloped, primarily with housing with a few streets of quality bespoke shops. Surround the area with some free parking and it might - only might - be a success. Until there's really something worth going for, Hanley as a shopping concept is finished.

A reflection of todays towns and cities, does anyone feel safe walking round them anymore?; homeless, spice rats, migrants, pick pockets, litter / squalor .............

In some respects they've created the problem with the store in Wolstanton, those loyal to M&S will go there rather than piss around having to park in Hanley.... My mum doesn’t drive and every Friday she pops into Hanley on the bus/taxi to get a few things from marks whether it be clothes but always some food until I take her on a big shop.....she’s done it since I was a kid It’s a crying shame for the likes of those people Not sure if this will be of any use to your mum but I have a midweek Ocardo pass £3.99 a month with a guaranteed delivery slot each week, where they add you regular items in each week to reserve it and you can change it up to the night before. The big plus compared to Tesco is the shopping still comes in plastic bags which as long as you give them back next time costs you nothing...
