We need to utilise the loan market very well this coming season if we’re to stand any chance of being at the right end of the table

I must admit I've never heard of him. Anyway here's Juergen giving his balls a little tickle.

Don't care how much he's worth, don't trust us to sign anyone decent. Only hope I feel is with the youth coming through ranks, looks very promising.

That’s setting the Bar pretty low In fairness once Matondo was given some game time he started to look like a footballer, a bloody quick one too. I wouldn't be against having him back with a good pre season. At least we would have a player who knows the club and surroundings etc, bedded in so to speak.

He looked in the last few games that he had integrated really well into the squad and was enjoying his time at the club, this will help if he enjoyed his time with us if he was to be interested in returning.

This Nigerian was signed by Liverpool in 2015 but was not allowed to play for them because he had not and still hasn’t met the criteria of playing a %age of games at senior international level for his country in the 2 years preceding his move. He has represented his country at u17, u20 and u23 level but never senior level. So how does he suddenly get a work permit? Have the rules changed? Liverpool are reported to be selling him and want £8m for him and we are reported to have shown interest.

oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/300097/linked-8m-liverpool-forward"Stoke City are among three English clubs reportedly keen on Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi - who has been granted a UK work permit six years after joining the Reds. Awoniyi, aged 23, has spent his career so far on loan in either Belgium or Germany after joining Liverpool from former Stoke midfielder Seyi Olofinjana's Imperial Soccer Academy back in 2015. He has made 16 starts in the Bundesliga this season for Union Berlin, which has ensured he has now qualified to play in England. Liverpool are not actively looking to sell the striker, and remained in close contact with Awoniyi over the course of the season. But it is understood they would expect to receive a fee of £8m to £10m for his services, having rejected a £5m offer from Anderlecht in the past."

Liverpool are reported to be selling him and want £8m for him and we are reported to have shown interest. One of the annoying things about the UK's work permit system (where it applies to sports persons) is that it really doesn't provide much joy for clubs who want to invest in the POTENTIAL of young players from other countries. Liverpool took a risk and were prepared to loan Awoniyi out to a German club in the hope that when he had proved he could play regularly in that league he would get a permit. So congratulations to Liverpool. What we don't know, of course, is how much (if anything) it cost Liverpool to subsidise his stay in Germany and what his current value is compared to their cost of developing him. Basically, only a club of Liverpool's size and affluence, could afford to do it - and it is yet another example of how our government rules have a bias in favour of the richer clubs. I suppose we could have done the same with Agudelo but would it have been regarded as just throwing good money after bad if, at the end of 5 or 6 years, we didn't get the permit? At the end of the day it is probably safer for bet365 or any owner of a football club, to invest in bringing in strawberry pickers or cockle collectors from overseas on seasonal contracts (there is a quota for them but not for footballers) than trying to find the next multi million pound superstar. You do have to wonder if our work permit system will mean that one of our high tech companies could miss out on the next Einstein because of it.

Permits are always a restriction to advancement, regardless. You bring in the best person for the job, if that person isn't English then that's a failing from the UK's education/development system. Why settle for mediocrity?

I now think that some supporters on here are just being silly and starting rumours based on unlikely or unexpected names just to create a thread. We have a choice now of either Kwadwo Baah or Taiwo Awoniyi.
Can we please go back to solid sensible speculation on players with names like Alfie Doughty.

Yeah we need pick easier names like Chiqui Arce, Danger Fourpence or Laughter Chilembe. Zimbabwe is a great source of odd-named players. Given our budget, we'd likely have to bring Segar Bastard out of retirement or try to get the Congolese strker, Bongo Christ. (Have also seen it as Christ Bongo) Kind of partial to the last name, sounds like a band that likely supported World of Twist at some point.
Have-A-Look Dube is another Zimbabwe player. (Probably renamed by his agent)

He did look very quick, he didn't look like much of a footballer. In his last 3 games Matondo struck me as having a decent amount of skill allied to his pace. And skill + genuine pace is a rare commodity these days. Obviously FFP means we have no chance of buying him this summer (unless we accepted silly (large) offers for some of our youngsters) but I would be delighted to have him for another season on loan with an option to buy. I am afraid I saw virtually no evidence of a footballing brain. He certainly looked quick when running with the ball which is a very useful attribute and defenders were backing off. However his choice and execution of pass was very poor.
