I want just one of the mediocre games as i'll be at V festival on that weekend! Really don't want to sell my ticket but if it's 1 of the big teams i'll have to...Or just miss the Saturday bands then get back to the site to see the later acts

I went to an FFS meeting with a guest speaker from the football fixtures compiling team so I know a little bit about their methods.
Every club is allowed to request certain days to be 'away' fixtures and also certain teams they don't want to face at certain tuimes of the year. For example most clubs will avoid home fixtures on days when other festivities are going on in their town. And a potential trouble game is more likely to be tucked away to a less prestigous date.
The preliminary fixtures are worked out well in advance of the release date and any amendments can be made afterwards but the appeals committees (appeals for changes) hands are largely tied. No team can be scheduled to play more than two away or home games on the bounce.
Also they try and be evenn handed with home or away first and home or away at Christmas or new year etc. The clubs and the police do have a certain amount of power to change fixtures but sadly the one group that don't really get much say is, surprise surprise, the fans!
