there is a reason they are paid so much , you need more than just a HGV license to drive a fuel tanker, it requires specialised training to be qualified to drive such dangerous loads , and then there is the danger money , you fancy sitting in front of 20 plus tonnes of highly explosive liquids ?

but hgv driers do grow on trees, and surely it can would only take an advanced driving course, handling of dangerous goods & basic H&S training, 6 months worth to turn a HGVer into a tanker driver?

From reports I have heard 38K is not their basic. That is with unsociable hours and overtime. To drive a tanker you have to be ADR (dangerous goods) qualified. That aint cheap and like people have said you need big danger money with some of the cocks on our roads.
Fair play to them for gettin what they can.

My dad is a LGV Class 1 Driver and apparently you don't need that much more training to become a tanker

the basic is 30k, about the same as a tube driver or you r average spark or joiner. its not that tanker drivers are particularly well paid but that the rest of us arent paid enough!! shell are making billions in profit, they can easily afford a pay rise and when you look into the forced overtime(often unpaid) they have to put up with, its hard to say it isnt deserved.
obviously teachers, nurses etc deserve a lot more than what theyre getting, but so do labourers and order pickers working for agencies and street cleaners. we're all getting screwed when you compare the average wage to the average profit of employers or the bonuses that are being paid out to london financiers and government contractors - good luck to tanker drivers on their strike, hope they get what they deserve and we see a few more groups of workers going out to get what theyve earned as well, before too long

YES I work for an agency of the DH and our pay rises are less than inflation and I don't get any bonuses or overtime - shall I walk out and demand more? No, I knew the basic when I signed up and understand the nature of the economy (well a bit anyway) so I remain professional and get on with what I agreed I would do. Why do people in this country feel that they are always owed something? |

Sorry Dave, but petrol isn't explosive. want to bet . remember this  Buncfield . petrol EXPLOSION In a confined space it explodes, like in a tank or an engine . in fact its far more explosive than gun powder . remember seeing a science programme years ago , they had 2 identical mortar style tubes to fire empty cans, one set up with afuse , one with a spark plus, in the first they stuck a table spoon of gun powder, and ignited it, the can just ablout floped out of the end of the tube, then they put a table spoon of petrol in the other and sent a spark to the spark plug. The can flew 200 yards |

Still doesn't make petrol an explosive. The confined space makes the autoignition temp lower. But definitely not an explosive. Of course gunpowder (loose) won't do diddly squat. If you take the gunpowder out of a bullet, it does bugger all too. Not a very scientific test in my opinion. |

38k to drive what they have to is acceptable to me, carrying 40/50,000 litres of fuel is an important job they are worth it, extremely capable drivers not your normal any hgv driver, when was the last time you heard about a tanker crash, they are worth every penny

Hello everyone, on the subject of fuel tanker drivers being paid to much let me explain a few points about my daily routine. I leave the house at 04.30am travel to ellesmere port to start work at 06.00 do my deliveries for that day and on a good day might get back in the house at 19.30. my basic salary is 21k for a 39 hour week, which is bumped up by overtime , most weeks i work between 60 and 70 hours.To become an ADR driver qualified to carry fuels etc i had to attend a course at my own time and expense. I agree its a well paid job, so do like i did and get yourself an ADR licence theres plenty of work out there.
