Each interview always starts with some random monologue that O’Neill just agrees to and moves on. Wouldn’t it be nice to ask more questions that everyone must be interested to know:
Michael, you’ve been playing 4-1-4-1 but are frustrated by not winning games, do you not think approaching more positively may help?
Michael, it could be argued that Cousins had not put a foot wrong when being played this season, and was unlucky to lose his spot last season. Meanwhile Allen and Mikel (though Mikel did better versus Reading) have looked very much out of form. What’s the rationale for dropping your most in-form central midfielder?
Etc etc etc.
Do Stoke reporters get paid? If it’s all voluntary work then fair enough, I will lessen my criticism/expectation.

Presumably it’s because they don’t want to risk upsetting the apple cart and need to maintain a good relationship with the club and manager. There is probably a slightly less confrontational way of asking those questions, but managers rarely give any kind of honest answer anyway, especially in these days when everyone’s media trained to their eyeballs.

But how truly essential is that relationship? We are no longer a Premier league team, we don’t often get national coverage, yet the press conferences are generally something that have to still be done. A reporter at BBC Stoke could just start to ask more interesting questions and not be in fear of their time being taken away simply because there is no one there to do so. It would just be nice for them to live up to the title ‘reporter’ occasionally even if that title is immediately prior to ‘sports’.

It’s the lifeblood of their coverage.

In terms of the non-written press asking questions at the press conference, is it Angela Smith (Radio Stoke), George Andrews (Hitmix Radio) and Dave Lee (Moorlands Radio)?
Already Signal has bitten the dust
If one of those 3 outlets stopped turning up, we'd lose 1/3 of the people asking questions on camera. So from that respect, the more the merrier.
I've got no idea what Hitmix or Moorlands Radio are, so don't know what kind of listening figures they get.
And then the written press/Sentinel get another session with MON once the camera's stopped rolling, don't they?
Sadly that's about it, isn't it? There's no interest from any national media, we get no coverage at all apart from one John Percy story every 6 months.
We'd be in an information vacuum without the Sentinel

Have to say I like Ange's questions much more than George 'alluded to' Andrews who has a set of pre=prepared questions which he will ask irrespective of the fact that someone has asked a similar question before If I was MON I would be tempted to adopt a Strachan response to some of the more banal questions. I did like Ange's question about some fans thinking the season was over. MON who rarely changes from a poker face seemed genuinely surprised at that view. In the absence of fans at the ground we should see more of this type of question. Maybe a time for a virtual 'meet the manager' session again?

I think Angela is pretty good. She obviously values maintaining a good relationship with the manager, but I think her questions are intelligent, quite comprehensive and she looks to prise out some insightful responses. She seems to be able to improvise a bit and definitely listens to the answers which is also important. I wouldn't really expect a kind of Nietzsche meets Jean Paul Satre discussion put it that way
The other guy is something else though. He has his fixed (mostly banal) questions and doesn't seem to listen to the answers. MON is extremely patient with this guy tbh.

The question 'why don't we make subs earlier when you campaigned for the return of a 9 man subs' bench?' is one I'd like to hear his answer on.
I can't stand George's meanderings but he actually elicited an interesting response about the new matchday travel / prep regime for distant away games. So maybe he's playing a long (really long-winded) game...

I can't stand George's meanderings but he actually elicited an interesting response about the new matchday travel / prep regime for distant away games. So maybe he's playing a long (really long-winded) game... O'Neill answered the question that he thought George was asking in that instance rather than the question he actually asked. George then followed up with an equally ridiculous question about those plans impacting on preparation time which O'Neill seemed a little bemused with before answering politely that it had no impact for reasons he'd just explained.

George Andrews is an idiot and I find Angela smith’s questions often quite inane. She also asks a question then goes on to answer it herself I agree, Angela's questions do have a rhetorical feel about them. George is George and always has been. To me it has a very sycophantic feel to it, and the manager is rarely asked any challenging or interesting questions. It's all slightly pointless because no manager is ever going to give the interesting stuff away in a public press conference e.g what his intelligence says about the next opponents or what tactics or system he's going to employ, or who's been awkward in training. So he tends to just say the blindingly obvious about the next opponents. It would be simpler to forget about questions and just put him in front of a camera and ask him to give us his view of the last game and our recent form and an update on the injury situation.

I think it would be nice to hear from someone other than MON as well.
Someone on the Board responsible for the whole operation.
Sir Peter used to rock up on a regular basis but since he donned his slippers and hit the horlicks we've not heard a peep from anyone presiding over this fiasco.

I thought Angela was far too soft with him after the Reading game and was borderline sychophntic on Radio Stoke
I was quite suprised as she is normally pretty direct to say the least ! Coupled with Liam Lawrence now towing the party line since he has been on the payroll. The imbalance is further not helped by getting 'Jimmy' and the like phoning in and making supporters look like a bunch of thick idiots.
A bit of balance would be nice !

"Michael, some fans have been a little confused by Jordan Cousins being dropped for Joe Allen recently, but the reality is that in a busy season you have to rest and rotate players don't you?" could just be "Michael, some fans have been a little confused by Jordan Cousins being dropped for Joe Allen recently, what comment would you make on that?"

I think the last person to ask an interesting question or make a challenging remark was John Acres, (still by far the best sports presenter at Radio Stoke), and he was banished to an early morning slot

The imbalance is further not helped by getting 'Jimmy' and the like phoning in and making supporters look like a bunch of thick idiots. A bit of balance would be nice ! Angela is a supporter not a journalist. As such, the questions she asks post match are often reflective of her view of the game on the day. You might think she was too soft on him post Reading because you thought it was shite but I suspect that Angela felt we'd played reasonably well, hence the nature of the questioning post match. Post Reading, were I asking questions, I'm sure I would have been seen as being too soft on him whereas post Rotherham and Huddersfield I might have been viewed as being too harsh. The questions she poses pre-match, in my opinion, smack of her first trying to appear like she's well versed in professional sport generally and football specifically, before then asking a question. Hence it becomes, at times, a little rhetorical. Nature of the best I'm afraid and probably why the last proper journalist Radio Stoke had was ousted for treading a little too close to the line post a rather tame surrender at Liverpool. I don't think Lawrence toes any line and if he sees fit to criticise, he often does. I guess their view of the Reading game was just different to yours, hence your criticism.

The thing with John Acres is that he's a proper journalist. He's not a Stoke fan either hence he had a degree of impartiality to his observations of what was happening on the pitch.
