Did you write and record this generation ex? An oldie but goodie! Nice dark electro there. Sounds good. Odd bits remind me of early human league, before they went more poppy.

Yeah, I tried to be more upbeat but couldn’t quite avoid the darkness!

How are the drums done? Real acoustic kit, digital kit, drum machine or a plug in?

I've taken a big step tonight in finally recording a very basic (but full) track successfully using Ableton Live Suite. I've spent almost 17 years (no exaggeration) hopelessly loyal to Acid Pro, formerly a Sony product, now owned by Magix. When I first discovered it, back on Sony Acid 7, I was absolutely blown away by it's ridiculously intuitive workflow. If you are new to music recording, Acid just makes the whole thing insanely easy and then I discovered the MIDI track editing functionality which was also way above the competition at the time I first discovered it. Friends of mine battled away with Cubase learning how a 'proper' DAW works and I continued to happily use Sony Acid recording a good number of my own songs over the years and mixing the various bands I've been in. Problem is, we're now 17 years on... and Acid 7 is a 32bit application, making it uncomfortable to use with modern 64bit VST's unless you jBridge which is a hack. Newer 64bit versions of Acid are really awful. The workflow and user interface is the same, but everything is a shed load more unstable. 64bit VST's and VST3's crash randomly. The software crashes randomly. Everything just crashes, all the time. I have the Roland VST's for when I'm doing 80's stuff and all you need to do to make it crash, is set something playing and change the patch on the Roland... it's that unstable. It's pretty clear from Magix forums that the software is dying on it's arse and the current owners aren't going to invest any more money... so as a DAW, it's finished. The only issue with that, is transitioning away has been really challenging for me. I tried PreSonus One about 6 months ago but that didn't work at all for me. Tried Reaper a few times... again, not happening. That's the thingf, Acid has a very unique and intuitive workflow - it took me seconds to work it out. My first attempt with FL Studio, I really didn't get very far after about 2 or 3 days. However, my first real try with Ableton tonight and I was able to bash together a demo. Not brilliant, but now I've got the basics, I can work my way outwards Hopefully start recording using 2023's answer to music production.

I've been messing around with hardware synths for a few years and have tried to avoid using a computer as much as possible by using multi channel hardware sequencers to sync and play melody, harmony, bass and rhythm tracks on different synths so I only use a DAW (Reaper) to do a bit of compression before exporting the audio to a flac file. I like the physical interaction with knobs, sliders and buttons over using a mouse- it's more faff and takes up way more space but it works for me.
To go further down that route I've been tempted recently by using a mixer that can also record audio to a SD card attached to the mixer - something like the Mackie Onyx 12, Tascam model 12 or Zoom L12. Some of these include EQ and compression so I believe all you need do is on a computer is convert the wav files to your preferred file format MP3, flac etc. Anybody got any experience of using this type of kit?

I injured my wrist at Christmas Eve, got surgery so I don't know where it will take me. I've done recording and played all my life, started with s Silvano monophonic tape recorder for live sessions at the age of 7. However, I can recommend Zoom R20. A digital porta studio where you record on S-cards. Great value for money.16 tracks. Only disdavantage is it only has 2 line inputs.
