Just started using Cakewalk by Bandlab - a lot to learn, but amazing program for free! It cost hundreds of pounds years ago, but is now totally free. Anyone else do any home recording? Let's see what you've got. This is my first attempt at recording, using guitars , mandolin and bass, along with some software synths and drums. Oh, listen on decent speakers if you can, sounds a bit tinny on tablet ones. Just A BoyGo easy on me

Hope it's not a lazy observation but I picked up shades of McGuinness Flint from that recording. We'll make a support act of you yet Andy

Yes decent effort that, I enjoyed it.
Check out McGuiness Flint's other hit Malt & Barley Blues for a bit more mandolin shuffle.

Thought the production was good too.

Yes, all my own work Thank you. Lots more things to try over the next few months. Need to try and do something a bit more rocky I think. Sure there must be others on here who like to dabble a bit? I know there are plenty of guitarists about.

I downloaded Reaper the other week. Don't really write songs, just love jamming along to different drum beats. Don't play to a great level but just love doing it. Play the bass and have got a few keyboards. I'm crap at production though. Have been in a jam band for years but want to do something on my own now because you can't do anything as a band at the moment. If I can get the production OK, I'll put some on.

I like Just a Boy. I've recorded a couple of piano pieces (on a keyboard), but I'm not very good at playing piano, especially since an injury prevented me playing for nearly a year. I downloaded the free version of ProTools a while ago but haven't got around to using it. I was planning to remix one of my old band's tracks and also get around to finally putting together a couple of songs I wrote aaages ago. I also wanted to cover one of my old band's tracks. I haven't felt like doing all that much stuff at home the past year though given how much most of us are stuck at home. Working from home has made a lot of usually enjoyable things seem a chore. Most of the creative stuff I've done is writing short stories and music has fallen by the wayside.

McGuinness Flint are one of those bands. The band under their name was just a small part of British music history. If you follow along there is Gallagher and Lyle and, my personal faves The Manfred Mann/Blues Band connection bringing in Paul Jones and, imho, one of Britain’s greatest slide players Dave Kelly (aside, he also, in the day had a great vegetarian restaurant) Recommended listening: The Official Bootleg Blues Album Graham Lyle wrote What’s love got to do with it for Tina Turner. Also check out “Heart on my Sleeve” not mentioned here yet. Anyhow, your composition, whilst awesome, is being compared to the royalty of British musicians. Good length Shane, Good length.

OK, some connections there i never knew. Gallagher and Lyle i know from the 70s (I wanna stay with you), but never knew their connection with Maguiness Flint. And also Manfield Mann, didn't know that. Interesting to see how many artists are connected. Some great stuff around in the 70s. Still waiting for some other Oatcakers' demos.......

Not my usual sort of music, because nowadays I listen to unintelligble vocals and obnoxiously heavy instrumentals.
However, clearly very talented mate and 10x better than anything I could conjure up, song has a very nice beat, rhythm to it.
The intro with just the acoustic reminded me of a song I've heard before, but for the life of me I cannot think of it's name. Any inspiration behind that or was it just something you ended up just writing out?

Hi Chig, I suppose I was trying to get a Jon Anderson (out of Yes) type of sound at the start, maybe something like "And You and I" fron Close to the Edge. I used a guitar with open tuning with only the second set of a 12 string set fitted, so it sounds a little different than standard tuning. Glad it was at least listenable for you! 🙂

Thank you Maryland. Yes, I can hear a bit of Closer to the Heart, love Rush, and Alex Lifeson is one of my favourite guitarists, along with David Gilmour and Jimmy Page.

Thank you Mr Clod! Much appreciated 🙂
Next one I'm working on is a bit more heavy/rocky. Although my voice doesn't really lend itself to that side of music. We'll see 🙂

Splendid meggeth. That (especially the intro) really reminded me of Bursting At The Seams era Strawbs (1973). Check out Lady Fuschia from that album.

Thanks Chesterstokie. I can see the resemblance! Hope they're not going to take me to court! 😯
I think it amazing that there are only 8 notes, but probably billions of songs around. No wonder some songs sound similar at times.
