Why was it 999 for emergencies, when it would have been quicker to dial 111?

Perhaps the theory was that it would be more difficult to dial in error? Complete guess and supposition on my part

2 reasons I think. 1.. The old dial phones you could tap out the number on the buttons where the handset went.so 9 taps, 9 taps, 9 taps would be 999. Unlikely to do that by accident. 2.. You could put a phone lock on phones to stop people calling long distance, so by placing it in the 9 hole stopped you dialing a zero, but kept all the other numbers active.

Because they knew that the NHS would need that number in response to a Global Pandemic!!

It was designed to try to ensure that people only called in a real emergency.
If you really wanted the Emergency Services, you'd be willing to wait for the dial to spin back-and-forth.
If it wasn't really an emergency, you'd lose interest while waiting, and hang up.

Mrs Beard of Hampstead made the 1st 999 call in 1937...The metropolitan police force are hoping to get an officer on the scene ASAP.

The trebble nine emergency number was used because of the basic physical act of dialling. The 9 position was easy to find on the dial, at the bottom and next to the metal rest attachment. In the dark, or in a smoke filled room it was the easiest number to locate and dial.
