I was in Auckland, working for 2 weeks, close to 20 years ago when it was going on down there. Arranged to go down and watch on the Saturday but when the day came it was too windy to race. Ended up in a watering hole that happened to be full of the race crews getting hammered. That's probably frowned upon nowadays!

The Americans dominated this event for decades until the Australians defeated them for the first time in the early eighties. Since then the competition has changed beyond recognition.
For anyone who enjoys a good read, the Australian Skipper who won the race wrote an excellent book about the series of races, which revolves around Positive Mental Attitude. He never once did not believe that he was not going to win it, even when the Americans had what appeared to be an unassailable lead. The Aussies also played mind games involving a Then new development of a winged keel.
The book is called Born To Win by John Bartrum. ⚓️

This is a serious question, I've never done any form of sailing. Is it tuff??? I wouldn't fancy being a grinder you need the strength of an ox and the stamina of a marathon runner. Plus did you see the yanks capsize the other day its was scary as shit they literally took off then smashed back into the sea and capsized.

Racing is very tough. At all levels from dinghy sailing on a local reservoir to the Americas cup.
The equivalent of Sunday Morning football to World Cup in skill, but physical effort is far more than non sailors could imagine.

Yep, out at sea in rough weather and trying to cook/eat/drink/pee/poop etc. and 4 hours on, 4 hours off, hot bunking, getting up for sail changes during your off time, for a few days and nights certainly gets to you after a while. This was the main type I used to sail in, a crew of 8 at the most www.yachtworld.co.uk/boats/1974/camper-nicholson-55-3115707/

Back when I played baseball in college, thought I was in decent shape. One weekend got talked into racing with a friend in a small 2-man sailboat on a lake. It sounded like it would be a good work out. Next day, it hurt a lot, "it" meaning every damned thing on me. I may have been in shape, but I wasn't anywhere near to being in "Sailing Shape." It was then I realized why sailors drank so much rum.

..... only sailed up here in FNQ and The Whitsundays, but it’s generally very pleasant inside the reef (unless there’s a cyclone coming) Did the Townsville to Dunk Island race for several years (we always came last.)

Congratulations to the Kiwis for winning the whole thing, again.
You really do have to admire the NZ approach to sport and wonder where we go wrong?
They've got consistently the best Rugby Union side in the world, the league side is world class too, their cricket team narrowly lost the WC to us two years ago, they're in the Test Championship final, they've just won the sailing thing, they're strong in rowing, netball and hockey, and all from a nation of just 4.5 million.
Football is just about the only thing they're a bit shit at.
Impressive stuff - we need to see what they do and copy it!
