When did cockney Steve die ? Must be four or five years ago he passed. Remember being on a coach with Steve going to Orient many moons ago. He was with his misses who lived in Stoke. On the way back we drive through Tottenham and they had played at home I think. Anyway there was road works and Spurs mob spotted us and put just about every window in the coach through. One of the only windows still intact was next to Steve and his Mrs. Anyway not sure if Steve lived around the Tottenham area. But that’s where he got off in the middle of the mayhem and just walked through the mob as if to say try it if you want to lads. And disappeared into the night. Another cold journey home as experienced by many back in the day !

Car had broke down on the M6 so we thumbed a ride up from a couple then met Tony & his crew in a pub. We were asking around for a ride home & he was first to offer a ride back in the van. What an experience that was, multiple stop offs on the way home including the legendary Salamanca. Got back into Castle at last orders. Signed up for his van on a regular basis after that. Everyone was mad, fantastic times through the Macari years.

2020 continues to get worse ..a truly horrible year for Stokes top table Like many of the characters of his era , Tony and me were worlds apart .. though as with others , that didn’t seem to bother him or me ..we accepted each other for what we were , Stoke fans , Stoke being the common bond and that was good enough for both of us RIP lad Well said Steve That was Tony to a tee. A group of used to travel from London in the 70s and 80s and Tony was one of the first to welcome us in the Talbot. After all we were staunch Stokies, which was the most important thing to Tony. We became real friends in the late 80s and nineties and when I moved to Stoke in 1988, I was welcomed onto the “battle bus” with other lengends such as Anton, Fudger and Mally. We had some laughs to put it mildly! Tony was really popular (except in Burslem maybe !!), which is no surprise; great company whatever the result. Whilst Tony would - shall we say - struggle to look Peter Crouch in the eye, he was genuinely a hard bloke; much harder than most blokes twice his size. But far more importantly he was a decent bloke and a genuine ‘terrace legend’. RIP little legs I will never forget!

It wasn’t road works but road widening was the issue which slowed the traffic . They were demolishing some houses to our left which provided the ammunition to off load on all six coaches Most of the windows on the left went through on ours and a back window where we had to fight to stop skins climbing in Several of our loons tried to get off and fight but the bus driver accelerated on the wrong side of the road and sped off I was 14 had no coat and just a shirt and it was snowing. And when I got back had to walk back to Normacot We had no shots and lost 2-0 ... supporting Stoke then was fucking nuts

Bit of a legend was Tony and his van. Wherever you went they seemed to be there in the 80's/90's
I'm a good few years younger and a casual, so we never really mixed, but back then everyone seemed to know each other, at least to nod or say hello.
A stand out memory (aside from his (muzzy, black kecks, sheepskin and leather) was in Newcastle, the night Wolves were all over the place. They'd been playing up at Scarborough, (1987 i think?) A sunny Saturday evening and what turned out to be a lively night in town. Tony small in stature led the defence.
RIP.

Travelled with Tony many times in the past although not directly with him but alongside each other Cardiff away midweek around 1999 ( Megson and won 2-1 ) was one of the stand outs when only 19 of us turned up to travel early morning from the old hempstalls pub despite the coach being sold out Still laughed about what occurred prior to the match for years after RIP Tony lad Fuck, what happened prior to the match mate? I got bricked that night on your account? BM

I knew Tony from back in the 80s on a nod and a wink scale. Got chatting in the 90s in Newcastle and he was firmly aware who i was, which surprised me. Regularly ran into each other after that and always chatted. My last memory of him was a Sheff Wednesday game at the Brit. I was waiting for a ticket at the satellite ticket office 10 minutes after K.o for a ticket. Down the ramp came around 15 Sheffield lads scattering a few Stoke. Tony and around 5 of his mates appeared around the corner,he winked at me . The next minute the few who had scattered,Tony's lot and myself suddenly grouped and a little roar went up. That was enough for the big ,bad SI clad Sheffield lads to hit the reverse mode and run. Typical of Tony he could gather a rag ,tag group of lads together this day and see off this cocky lot. RIP Tony.

First met Tony late 60s. Dave Orpe, Barney, Shirley, Tony etc. he went everywhere that Stoke played including "friendlys". Very, very tough lad who didn't seem to know the meaning of fear. Played football with him for Noah's Ark Hartshill in Ansells league, tenacious little f***er. Tony Austin, Froggy Ford, Rob(Marty) & occasionally Burnley Dave, Ritchie, Big Andy, Tony seemed to know everyone. If you've ever been in a ground and heard G R E E N H O O O O F, then that would be Tony. Godspeed Tony.

Saw him often mingling in with opposition fans at away games but biggest memory was at an England game. I was on a coach of half & half Leeds & Bradford fans (where I live) waiting to set off from car park at the end and everyone stood up and went to the front when we saw loads of smoke coming from the next coach. It was trying to escape an attack by Stoke fans led by Tony who was literally hanging onto the front windscreen wipers with others trying to get on board to attack Bolton fans. When I told our coach fans who it was they were well impressed and said leave them to it and began cheering them on!

But, on the 27th December 1977 Stoke played at Leyton Orient (lost 3-1), Spurs were at home to Manfield Town (drew 1-1). Also the previous day (26th) Spurs had won 3-1 away at Millwall, as alluded to by durbanscircus, although I don't know what he means by "twatted at Millwall", we won on and off the field that day.

By Memory around 32,000 at White Heart Lane that daynand most them wanted to get on our coach- Spurs well supported home and away that season
