All shackles are off and even if/when we go in front we will simply have to continue attacking as we have very little defensive impetus in the team, which by the way is not a criticism of fielding our three best defenders and best goalie. I just hope Mikel is finally fit.
If you think I'm being positive, just one minor gripe. I don't know what Vokes is doing in that team. Oh I get it: you have to have a focal point, but he has neither the pace nor the skill to combine with these players. He could slow us down in open play.
Villa won't know what hit them when the first half is over and the score is 0-4. Followed by a further two in the second half. They might get a consolation goal late in the game.

Brown at right wing-back? Bet he'll be thrilled with that He should at least be thrilled with getting a start.

Like it, hope it proves productive.
Good to see Mikel is judged to be fit enough to play twice a week.
Powell will be playing to get his place against Brum, so hopefully he can hit his stride tonight, and get back to where he was last season.
A bit surprised to see Souttar playing. Thought he would be saved/rested for the next match and Batth get a run out.
Attack, attack, attack.

Yes because all those 3 will sit. Just edited so it makes more sense They're very indisciplined then. Most of our good chances have fallen to clucas.

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/aston-villa-stoke-team-live-4566732Jacob Brown at right wing-backMichael O’Neill had been clear that, in the long term, that Brown could be used at wing-back. That long-term has only been a couple of weeks. But the manager is obviously a fan, seeing a bit of Adama Traore in him after he scored the winner at Wolves in round two. It’ll be interesting to see how he gets on tonight and whether he can really be the competition for Tommy Smith that this squad needs while Tom Edwards is so out of favour. Josh Tymon at left wing-backTymon has really impressed in central midfield and his versatility will be an asset this season. But can he be the stand out wing-back? That seems like it should be his best position, making the most of his best assets. I think he’s got a real chance to make this position his own. We shall see. John Obi Mikel in central midfieldA surprise appearance for the 33-year-old in the cup, flanked by Jordan Thompson and Nick Powell - or in some kind of combination with the two. Maybe Powell will be just in front, maybe Mikel will be just behind the pair? I thought Mikel was the best we’ve seen him yet on Saturday. He was so calm when Preston were reduced to 10 men and refused to get dragged into any needless battles. Goodness knows why he didn’t shoot for the goal but it was a nice little pass to tee up Lee Gregory.

Fair dos. Bold.
Hope this means Powell can be a bit more No. 10ish in position with Mikel and Thompson a flat defensive 2.

I might be ignorant about who half that lot are - but not scary, is it? Elmohamady at centre-half? Surely worth a nibble at 5/1? I've had a dabble ... 🤞

I really like the look of that team. I certainly think we can give Villa a good game.
Hopefully pushes Powell in a more advanced role as well. If he can click with Campbell and Vokes tonight that'd be golden. He'll be wanting to fight for his place back in the league team against Brum.
And just imagine the boost it will give the team and us lot by reaching the QF's as well. I'd be thrilled.

Relatively happy with that - I'd imagine vokes will be subbed second half but That's what I want to see.

A way more interesting & imaginative line up than any league game. Pacy wing backs, Mikel & Thompson combining behind Powell floating & 2 up front, Hmm. Even if it sort of works & we get beaten by slim margins, should try this for a league game and Keep It Positive.
C'mon Y M P !!

Still think we will be over run in midfield.
This has the makings of a 3-0 reverse unfortunately.

Despite Ince on it, I like the look of the bench too. Only two defenders.
Fletcher to replace Vokes as soon as possible. TOB to run down the line every time Powell starts relaxing, bringing out the best in him. But if Mikel or Thompson, or both, are injured, tired or are sent off, we don't really have anyone to replace them without changing the formation considerably.
