The publishers have confirmed that the paperback version of Marvellous will be out on 17 September. It is an extended and updated version of the hardback to include everything which has happened to Nello since the film. This time the publishers have gone with a Stoke City themed cover ( see attached) Attachment Deleted

Thanks for the update Malcolm. It's such an inspiring & uplifting story that anyone who has seen the film is deeply touched by. I don't think I've ever seen a film that made me laugh & cry simultaneously. Likle many more people, I'll be buying a copy.

I must have seen it about 30 times now at various showings but I still well up, particularly at the point where Toby does that heartfelt cry after Mary's death. A brilliant piece of acting. The thing I like about the humour is that everybody has a different favourite line or scene. The new paperback includes a number of amusing stories about things which have happened since the film which haven't yet been in the public domain, which I hope you will enjoy, such as Terry Conroy's account of Neil's meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury ( just to give you a little tempting teaser ).

I look forward to the read as I did my school work experience 'helping' the physio, Nello and Maggie (I think was her name) and somehow kept hanging around for matchdays until Joe Jordan arrived. I will never forgive miserable Jo for ending my dream!

Just to say that Nello and I have agreed that the authors' royalties ( such as they are ! ) from the sales will be donated to Lou's homeless charity and the Keele Students Volunteering project ( which organises students volunteering in the local community), which are Nello's favourite charities. Not a fortune by any means, but better than nothing.

As many will know, the New Vic theatre's stage version of Marvellous was due to open last autumn but was moved to April this year. It won't come as any surprise to learn that it has now been moved to next autumn, covid permitting of course. I am actually relieved that it's still in their plans. They see it (rightly) as a feel good play which will be appropriate for the times. I have read the script and Nello and I watched some of the rehearsals in the summer. It is different from the film, and is very good and very funny. It is an adaptation for the stage of the book rather than the film, and as such contains a lot of material which isn't in the film, particularly about Nello's early life. The new updated and extended paperback includes a picture of myself, Nello and Mike Hugo, the actor who is due to play him taken at the rehearsals. One note of sadness. Those who have read the book may remember that Nello's uncle Dan features. He was a significant figure in Neil's childhood. Sadly he died from Covid a few days ago. Nello is of course very sad about it. There are some things which even he can't put a positive spin on. Otherwise he's OK and has adapted to spending so much time on his own remarkably well, writing letters to various people including Jo Biden this week . He spent xmas day on his own for the first time ever, because the family who he normally spends the day with couldn't entertain him because of the covid restrictions. They did however deliver his christmas lunch to him, so that was a main worry solved One of his helpers who is married to a teacher happened to mention one of her husband's former pupils aged only 20 who is sadly terminally ill, and how he liked a particular film in which Toby Jones and Nick Gleaves ( rev Mark in Marvellous) appeared. Neil was immediately on the blower to Nick to ask him to get something from himself and Toby, and Nick is on the case. So he can work some magic even from isolation. If anyone is buying the book, I'd recommend getting the new paperback version ( see above) which is updated with more recent material.

Great update cheered me up no end. We have got tickets for the play but didn't realise Michael Hugo was playing the lead role, I am looking forward to it even more now.

Nello has always made it clear to the managers that following his sensational sub appearance v Villa, when the goals have dried up he's always willing to bring his boots and take his place up front

Great stuff Malcolm.
It’s good to hear that the play is going ahead.
I presume Joe Biden will soon be on the phone to Nello.

The "Marvellous" play at the New Vic is now due to open on 1st October and run for three weeks. The theatre are currently ringing those who had previously brought tickets to offer them new dates, after which I'm sure tickets will go on sale in the near future.
