Okay it's a quiet news day.
1.Player latches on to a through ball, bears down on goal, rounds the keeper and finishes with aplomb
2.Direct from a free kick, a coruscating drive, up and over the wall with dip and bend, nestling just inside the stanchion.
Most recent examples of the above?
I just know someone will say 'last week' while I am thinking it was forever ago!

Peter Hoekstra rounded the keeper v Reading in 2002 and you’re talking as if it was years ago.

Why do opposing keepers never slice or punch the ball into their own nets? Btw we are unlikely to see any "coruscating" free kicks until MON explains to Macca what that actually means

We probably don't need one! Danny Higginbotham used to just cane them through the middle of the wall. WHU FA Cup QF.

Outside the very top levels of the game, I don't really think many players score those types of goals on a regular basis tbh. Shaqiri scored a few decent freekicks while he was here, though.

It’s not just a stoke thing but football in general, chipping the keeper has become a dying art.

There was always an air of excitement and anticipation whenever Kav was taking a free-kick within shooting range. I never quite understood why as the ball invariably either smacked into the wall or sailed into row Z

Problem with a forward rolling it into the net after rounding the keeper is it takes some of the instant celebration away.... you know it’s coming. Much prefer when they lash it into the net, a-la-Wingie....

We don't score enough from free kicks, it seems a weak area of our squad. It's an area that needs addressing, we need to be able to score from every position where there is a chance to score.
Even if we don't score from a free kick it needs to test the keeper. A specialist will more often than not get a corner from a free kick or get the keeper to make an error for a follow up.
Strangely there don't seem many specialists about yet it should be one of the simplest ways to get a goal. A lot of practice and the same approach over and over. Then again the majority of footballers don't seem that good at kicking a ball and are more like athlete's.

One of the first games I went to, Mike Pejic lashed a free kick past David Harvey when we beat Leeds 3-2. But more recently, I remember Liam Lawrence scoring a pearler against QPR the season we were promoted. In fairness, both of those goals the ball may have been touched to them...

When was the last time we even scored directly from a free kick? Wasn’t it Allen at Sheffield United?
