Maradona Won it all Only Messi and Ronaldo come close Sorry but Matthews is nonsense. Great player but not on the same planet Fair enough if you think there’s been better but “not on the same planet”? That’s a very odd thing to say given Stan’s extraordinary career and influence on the game. Of course he’s in the conversation.

Billy Dane If I'm not allowed him then Stan, obviously To lose 6 of the best years of his career and still achieve what he did will probably never be equalled.

Der Kaiser- Franz Beckenbauer. Would put those attackers in his back pocket. Beckenbauer is a good shout for best defender ever For me it would be down to 3: Beckenbauer, Bobby Moore, Franco Baresi

Did not Sir Stan and Pele once play on opposing teams when Stan was well into his 40s?

If that’s the only criteria it’s easy, just count the medals, the player with the most is the greatest.

We used to sing "Georgie Best...Superstar...looks like a woman and he wears a bra" Seemed like one of the more innocent songs of the time. But would now fail on 3 counts. Insulting to women, chaps with long hair and transvestites I remember it well gods!!! 😁

Stanley Matthews The only player to put an extra 10,000 on the average home gate at away grounds he played. The only player invited to go on personal tours to other parts of the world, when travel was very difficult. The first English League footballer of the year and won it twice. The first European footballer of the year. The first footballer to be knighted. Generally regarded as the greatest ever by his peers. The player, Pele said taught the world to play football. Played on pitches today's footballers would find impossible. Played against defenders who would terrify today's forwards. (Apologies, I digressed.) Walked into Soweto township in South Africa with a net full of footballs to give free coaching to deprived kids, when everyone said he was crazy to do so, and inspired a whole continent to play the beautiful game...

"He shot, he missed, he must be fucking pissed, Georgie Best, Georgie Best" Yeah seemed like innocent songs at the time, singing them in the schoolyard age about 7 lol

It's easy in the modern age to look at the grainy footage of Sir Stan, and what was considered skillful in his era,and be dismissive compared to what players are capable of now,but people didn't play like Matthews then, the culture was predominantly to pass the ball not dribble with it,and certainly not as expertly with the speed, frequency, regularity and as sustainedly as SSM did. The 'Matthews shuffle' and shoulder drop were as radical in their day as the Cruyff turn or the elastico/flip-flap decades later. He really was pioneering in the way he played the game itself and the way he kept himself in shape to play his game. A genuine world superstar.
