Stanley Matthews
The only player to put an extra 10,000 on the average home gate at away grounds he played.
The only player invited to go on personal tours to other parts of the world, when travel was very difficult.
The first English League footballer of the year and won it twice.
The first European footballer of the year.
The first footballer to be knighted.
Generally regarded as the greatest ever by his peers.
The player, Pele said taught the world to play football.
Played on pitches today's footballers would find impossible.
Played against defenders who would terrify today's forwards.
(Apologies, I digressed.)

Jesus ‘H’ it’s hard to argue against that, I love Stan , he signed my 98 away shirt that my mum threw away when I moved out, but he wasn’t sir bobby. That boy had it all

Maradona Won it all Only Messi and Ronaldo come close Sorry but Matthews is nonsense. Great player but not on the same planet Your simply wrong there Matthews was the world superstar in the 1930's Problem with perceptions now is most of the footage of him is from the 50's when he was in his (very lengthy!) Veteran phase Be like judging Messi on his form in about five to ten years from now.

That boy had it all You should read Bobby's autobiography "The United Years" where he drools over Matthews, for pages, talks about his ambition as a boy to emulate Matthews as a winger, how he and Jackie would always stand near the corner flag when Blackpool played Newcastle so they could be close to their idol, how whenever he visits Preston football museum he always insists on watching the Matthews' final and how he destroyed the Bolton FB, Ralph Banks, who was regarded as one of the very best. He writes of many of his 50s heroes and says Matthews "was the greatest of them all."

Maradona Won it all Only Messi and Ronaldo come close Sorry but Matthews is nonsense. Great player but not on the same planet Between the ages of 24 to 30 Stanley Matthews career was put on hold because of a slight issue going on in the world. I wonder what Messi and Maradonna plus others careers would’ve looked like if you take these years out of their careers? (Of course it’s a crazy hypothetical point to raise and doesn’t diminish what they have actually achieved)
