You, a cynic? I’m not having that 🙂 Think the shot of them outside the Christadelphian Hall was the one by Wolstanton Marsh on Dimsdale Parade. His mum's house / his flat was shot in Lanark Walks just off Rothesay Avenue in the Westlands.

It was indeed, which was where Mary's real funeral took place. I watched the filming from a side room with Nello. For me that was a surreal experience having been at the real funeral. Like going to someone's funeral twice. The more so because many members of the congregation in the film were members of that church who were also at the real funeral, including the guy took the real funeral. I found Toby's speech ( which was very similar to what Nello said at the real funeral) so moving I started to blub. A member of the production crew spotted this, came across with a tissue and whispered " she's in a better place now" which was very thoughtful of her, but at another level ridiculous, because this was film set ! Nello looked at me and said " What are you crying for ? She wouldn't want you to cry. Now go and get me a cup of tea" Which of course I promptly did. Outside afterwards I told Toby he had made me cry. He gave me a hug, which wasn't quite what I expected, but I realised that if you tell an actor they have made you cry, it's actually a big professional compliment.

The house used for his mum's house is just a few doors from Nello's real flat, which is the path they walked up in the film. Her real house was just the other side of that green, less than 100 yards away.

Is it true in the Gordon Cowans testimonial that Nello had a great chance of scoring, but Tony Kelly ruined it for him or, did i dream this ? No, you didn't dream it, and Nello still hasn't really forgiven him I met TK in the Waddington suite last year. He claims to have no recollection the incident, although he knew all about it ! Now works for an organisation which helps footballers with alcohol problems. Nice bloke. I prefer to remember him nutmegging Grobellar to score in that memorable night at Anfield, when among other things, my youngest daughter was the Stoke mascot.

When I lived in Wolstanton in the 1960s before joining the RN I used to attend that Christadelphians Hall on Dimsdale Parade just for the Friday night youth club which was ace. None of the local Methodist Churches, of which there were many, provided anything like the Christadelphian Church. Last night I saw much that I had missed the first time. Neil's one liners, not deliberate of course just his natural response, had me in tears of laughter. Think it was the last scene where he needs a lift home so he asks the Vicar "can you drop me off on your way home" to which the Vicar replied "sorry I’m not going that way" to which Neil responds "you will if you take me home". Comedy gold.

Is my memory playing tricks on me or did they edit out quite a bit of the Boat Race section from the original?

It's really very good.
Talking about shooting locations, it amused me watching the start where you're supposed to believe he's stranded in a field hundreds of miles from home, but in reality you know he just needs to cross Keele Road and cut through the park.

Haha my Mrs said why are they making out he’s in Scotland I drive past there every day. First time I’d seen it last night for my sins and what a fantastic film it is. Malcolm and Macari are absolute saints

The whole film was shot in North Staffordshire, apart from Gresty Road and the Racecourse grounds. We could make a quiz out of this ! Anyone recognise (a) The "Houses of Parliament" (b) The scottish vicar's church

The film has being cut from when it was first released ,Nello played a prank on a unidentified player in the dressing room that was shown in the latest showing but what has being cut is that see player stole the ball off Nello as he was about to score as revenge for Nello embarrassing him in front of the other players ,that player as a lot of Stoke fans know was Kelly that has being cut for some reason

I wouldn't say I have a photographic memory, far from it, but I have very good movie memory, far better than real life! Trust me on this one. It was always the fakeout of the headed goal and then the dressing room reveal.

TK did inadvertently deny Neil a goal - although I don't think Nello ever embarrassed him or that he ever sought a revenge. The prank, which is in the film, was played on Martin Carruthers and did really happen - at an away game at Tranmere, when Carruthers actually scored. The film shown on Wednesday was exactly the same as the original.

It was Whitmore church which I think is called All Saints.

Top drawer stuff indeed and all the more poignant if you're from S-o-T and clock the various locations of course.
While TJ is excellent as Nello, the one thing I would have perhaps coached him on a bit more Malcolm Clarke (if you ever got the opportunity that is) was his accent. For me, not the full throttle Stokie it might have been?
That said, maybe that the direction was to tone it down somewhat to make it more comprehensible to all the poor souls in this land that, unfortunately for them, are not from Stoke?
p.s. Have you still got the mini metro?
