Never seen this before, just before my time. Jimmy and Big John, what a front two.

Was that Hugh Johns commentating? My favourite ever, better than Motson, Davies and a trillion miles better than the crap we have to endure these days with the the likes of Tyldesly.
This was the time I first recall football sticker albums and the strips.
Fond memories.

Motson was and still is the worst commentator the world has ever seen and those shirts were put in a very hot wash

These highlights were on a 'golden years' vhs the club issued weren't they? About 30 years ago? I remember I used to watch the video whenever I was off school pulling a sickie, there was also highlights of Derby away? And a stunning Jimmy Greenhoff goal at Birmingham?

Funny how you remember newspaper headlines, the Guardian went for 'The future looks bright for smooth Stoke' after this one.
We'd ended Leeds 26 match unbeaten run the season before with a 3-2 win and made sure they didn't threaten anything similar again.

Well before my time, but some of those hair cuts were fab. Hudson looked every bit a class act there.

Funny how the mind plays tricks I was sure there was something about them having a new kit that day , but must have been another time .

Smart shirt with the black collar That was probably the most sober kit Admiral made in the 1970s. Surprising we didn’t get one like Sheffield United or Southampton. It definitely would have been a kitsch classic.

Salmons looked half decent there. Just missed out on this golden era due to date of birth but feel like I lived it later in folklore coming from a Stoke mad area and family.
Didn't hear that much about Geoff though. Any good?

Salmons was my favourite player at the time. Fine player, didn't waste much. Afellay the one he reminds me of in recent times.

That is still my favourite Stoke team.
But Haslegrave playing in that game, he was usually the 12th man. Presumably TC was out injured.

Amazing how many locals there were in that side. Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Smith,Dodd, Haselgrave. Whats happened to local football.

Geoff Salmons was a very good player. Him and Huddy were best mates and drinking buddies. They also worked together brilliantly on the park.
Some bloody good players in that team. Enjoyed that. Thanks.

That was a very good Leeds side they beat too. Hudson was just like watching an artist at work
Hunter, Gray, McQueen, Bremner, McKenzie, Reaney, Giles, Jordan, Clarke would have got in any side in the league plus I’ve probably missed some

After some of the Stoke Youth team circa 84-86 graduated into the first team, I really struggle to recall any home grown players until Andy Griffin turned up. From what I can tell many football clubs have been making inroads into the potteries for school boy signings. What interests me is how clubs like Leeds and Southampton have been producing good Players for the last six decades.

We'd ended Leeds 26 match unbeaten run the season before with a 3-2 win and made sure they didn't threaten anything similar again. One of the other newspaper headlines after that 3-0 game was 'CLOUGH FINDS IT TOUGH' The reason I remember that is we were on holiday in Majorca at the time and someone took a picture of me holding up the back page of the paper with that headline. Back then the papers took an extra day to arrive out there so I probably didn't get to find out the result of that game until the Monday!

I found Hugh John's commentary poetical. I remember his 'There it is!" for the goals. He was a wonderful commentator, my favourite ever, and he used to love Stoke in that period, he was very eloquent admirer of skilful football. Loved Greenhoff and Huddy.

Hugh Johns was way ahead of his time there. Mike Doyle was as cool a player as you'd see but apparently a bit of a loose cannon off the pitch.

It was between Arsenal and Leeds for the League that year and we had beat Leeds 3-0 at home the game before Arsenal, would that have been your first game then?

I know that Mike Doyle fought with alcoholism and died of liver failure at the age of 64. He seemed like a very steady character on the pitch. He was one of Alan Durban's defensive rocks in our promotion year. Played 115 times for us, quite a lot really, considering he was considered as past his best when he came here at the age of 32. So perhaps qualifies as an unsung hero too!
