I cannot believe people on here are critical of New Zealand’s approach to covid. They’ve had 26 deaths. We’ve had 122,000 deaths. Jesus hates fucking Christ, do we really have to do this again! The population and land mass of New Zealand has absolutely no comparison to the Uk.

If they've only had 26 deaths in twelve months, why are they imprisoning the population of their capital city because of one case for a week? It's bullshit. I would imagine it's because their extremely cautious approach has paid dividends to date with almost no deaths and a GDP forecast of +5.6% over the next 18 months after only declining by 4.3%. With the vaccine being rolled and with light at the end of the tunnel I'm sure they're thinking "Why chance anything at this point?" You imagine a lot of things, you post everything you imagine 100 + times a day.

Complete and utter insanity this, they are absolutely obsessed with this zero Covid approach - it's a fools errand. I feel sorry for the people, they will never get themselves out of this never ending loop of lockdowns with a government that have lost their heads over this. Yet she’s lauded by many over here as being the perfect leader. It just proves that there’s never going to be a perfect resolution.

Yes they’ve done really well but their PM has a hell of a lot easier job because their country doesn’t have the big cities that we do. Theirs twice as many people in London as the whole of New Zealand and size wise in land mass us and they are the same.

It's called being proactive, the very fact they've only had 26 deaths tells you the policy is working. Locking down for a week now is better than just saying 'fuck it' and then ending up going into a 3 month lockdown further down the line.

I feel sorry for the people, they will never get themselves out of this never ending loop of lockdowns with a government that have lost their heads over this. How much lockdown have NZ had versus us since the beginning of this shitshow? Not a direct response to the question. ‘State debt had increased to £2.1trn by the end of January, the highest debt-to-GDP ratio in almost 60 years. Speaking to the Financial Times, the chancellor warned that the UK is "exposed" to changes in currently low interest rates - and a rise of just 1% would add £25bn a year to the cost of servicing debt.’ SkyNews. I’ve not been on here for a while and understand people being reticent of direct comparisons but questioning NZ’s response with their incredible record in all departments is odd. Should they now not do these short local lockdowns? Leave it a few months till they have to do national lock downs so they can then close schools.

It’s a lot easier for them to isolate when they do have an outbreak as everything’s on a much smaller scale.

How much lockdown have NZ had versus us since the beginning of this shitshow? They may have had less lockdown time than us, they got on top of Covid early which is admirable. But this approach now is not sustainable in the slightest. They are taking it too far now. Locking down an entire city for a case of covid? It is madness and anyone that agrees with that approach really needs to have a word with themselves.

If the alternative is to let it spread wildly and uncontrollably killing tens of thousands and causing a lockdown for months or 3 lockdowns in our case, then I think locking down a city for a week for one case seems very sensible. They clearly know better than us.

It doesn’t need to be sustainable once they’ve vaccinated everyone though as I said, it’s not a long term strategy just one that buys them time. And I don’t think you can argue with it in terms of the number of deaths or their economic outlook over the short/medium term.......

There’s no question her job re covid has been easier than ours. A large degree down to the way she dealt with it in the beginning. She closed borders on 3 Feb 2020 for example. We are yet to do so properly!? She is handling it brilliantly. And her nation confirmed that in their mid-pandemic election where her party won a majority, something not done since they changed their electoral system. She has been a wonderful example of a strong and decisive leader making good decisions when it comes to covid. Perhaps our leaders could learn from others and not be so arrogant to think they know best.

Have you ever really took time to read some of your posts Do you realise how remote New Zealand actually is And that all imported goods come via container or air freight and is un accompanied We simply could not shut our borders there are thousands of lorries a day entering the country Unlike New Zealand we didn’t have a couple of cases entering the country which could be pounced on We probably had hundreds all over the country at the same time at the start Are you saying we should of shut our borders to all accompanied freight And left hundreds of thousands of british citizens stranded abroad for moths until sufficient tests were available

I guess that helps isolate any cases. Unfortunately she doesn’t seem to be as much on top of homelessness where their record is far worse than ours.

You can’t compare NZ to us let them have our population and see how well they would have done , it’s ludicrous to even compare the situations Just to point out how difficult it is to effectively lock down the UK, apart from the population being the third highest island in the world, more Britons travelled abroad in 2018 than any other nationality. In 2018, 126.2 million passengers were British – totalling 8.6 per cent, roughly one in 12, of all international travellers. The UK was followed by the US (111.5 million, or 7.6 per cent of all passengers) and China (97 million, 6.6 per cent). www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/british-travellers-iata-world-air-transport-statistics-a9029366.htmlDespite being a relatively small country geographically, the UK is one of the highest countries for rail travel with the countries higher on the list being much larger in terms of population and size of the country. Apart from daily commuters, particularly in and out of our big cities, anyone who sees the British motorways on a Friday and Sunday night, knows how many travel on our roads, and there is a large population work away from home during the week. I'm not defending the government's lack of control of the pandemic, a larger country has more resources, I'm just stating how much more difficult it is than for a small country like New Zealand, and how rapidly a disease is likely to be transmitted in the UK.
