It is frightening. Both my folks are over 80, 1 with cancer the other with terrible lungs. I called them today to tell them that it's my assessment that the NHS will start to be overwhelmed in the next week or so and if they take risks and catch it today they will be at the hard end of the symptoms in 10 days to two weeks and be last in a long line for an icu. I was pretty brutal. But something had to stop em "popping to the shops". Good for you mate. My parents are divorced and have remarried, so I've now got two sets, both over 80, one set are listening (I gave them the similar brutal advice as you) the other set aren't. This is why I said that I thought the government were being irresponsible by not closing all pubs and restaurants now. Allowing Mother's Day to go ahead on Sunday could have catastrophic consequences, all those generations mingling together in celebration and then returning the eldest generation back to care homes all over the country ... what could possibly go wrong? Cheers Paul. It's hard to get that generation to lose faith in the bloody mindedness that has served them so well. I'm not as totally down on the UK strategy as a lot of people but I think the messaging has been abysmal. The Tories usually excel at simplistic, repetitive messages. They have failed completely this time. And Mothers day... an unthinkable disaster for those who haven't deciphered the message. Just as things look set to crunch.

I see praise and grumble’s finest is playing billy big bollocks and posting pictures of himself down the pub.
Literally makes me fucking angry, so many posts from people on here going the extra mile, at risk of losing their job, facing uncertainty, have relatives at risk etc and yet some selfish bastards can’t even begin to make an effort. The first tossers to moan when they or someone they know can’t get an ICU bed too.

Just helped persuade an Aunt to cancel a planned trip to her 72 year old friend tomorrow. They thought they were following the government advice but I'm pretty sure the government would really want them to stay apart right now. Isolation is horrible and I worry for their mental health but maybe we'll see a renaissance of new 70+ year old Twitch streamers or something. Some of the old lads I've known at my locals have been top jokers, would be great they could take their pranks online.

Disgusting - a politician who was given the secret preparedness information in the US dumped up to $1.6 million of his stocks on February 13th, which is most of his wealth. At the same time he was parroting the Trump party's talking points about how it wasn't going to be a big deal. He also gave bigger warnings to a bunch of folk who could afford the (up to) $10k entry fee to the rich folk club. Makes a bit more sense now as to why the Trump administration started classifying Covid information back in January. They knew this was coming and they lied to people while they were bailing themselves out. I know that this is what Trump voters voted for, but it still horrifies me. Come on mate, this is not Political, people are dying. felonious and gang going no comment.

Where do people fall on the average age of people being admitted to hospital? Do we think that we're somehow maybe accidentally doing something different, do we think it's a timing thing and we'll see this later on or is it a coincidence and our datasets aren't big enough?

The total number of people 19-70 is probably many times the total number of people 70+. Given that many people in the younger pool have chronic illnesses, I think its purely mathematical and not the causes you suggest. Sorry mate, maybe it's me but you're going to have to hit me with that again because I've read it back several times and I'm still not getting the point you're making. Let's say in fictitious land there are : 100,000 people over 70 yrs old. 60% get the virus = 60,000 of which 50% need CCU = 30,000 Over 70 in CCU 900,000 people aged 19-70 yrs old. 80% get the virus (spring break etc) = 810,000 of which 10% need CCU = 81,000 19-70 in CCU. News reports - Almost 3 times as many people aged 19-70 are in CCU as those over 70.

Any comment on what caused this pandemic that originated in Communist China ? we have to find the real cause of this virus before we can tackle it's consequences, it's easy to blame the response of others without knowing the real origins of a killer virus, in my opinion there is a lot more to this than we are being told by the authorities hence the reactive nature rather than pre active measures I smell a rat or could it be a bat

As I understand it, it doesn't matter if you care about saving lives. We know it's a coronavirus and we can work on a cure without knowing where it's from. That's pretty boring for the conspiracy folk though. Gotta keep yourself entertained in quarantine! EDIT: If I'm wrong, can anyone explain how knowing that swine flu is from pigs or avian flu came from birds helped in any way with the treatment once it was out?

The one useful thing I can think of learning from this is finding out clearly which companies are scum, then if they make it through this shitshow then trying to make sure everyone I know never gives money to the companies run by proper shitguzzling management ever again.

I know mate. I just hope there’s enough decent people out there to roll with the punches and show some of that Churchillian spirit. It’s a fine line though between banding together or falling apart. It’s going to be a massive test of Western society. Will the looters and scum outnumber the decent folk? I’m trying to be optimistic but every time I foolishly check social media I feel a little less confident. It's big ask for even basic humanity to prevail. For too long selfishness over community, competitiveness over compassion, 'me and mine' over 'us and ours' and a general ugliness of spirit have been drilled into the society and economy in which we live. It is its very lifeblood. Foodbanks a mainstream necessity, people choosing spreading disease over poverty and old people dying in corridors barely making the papers is its narrative To think that can be turned into communal allotments, the power and wellbeing of 'us' over the desire for the prosperity of 'me' and Adele as the Vera Lynn is fantasy island I'm afraid. Unfortunately I totally agree with everything you say. Sadly. Maybe we have to hope a little. As Stoke fans we’re used to it. You hope and hope. You get close to giving up. But then you’re surprised. Maybe this is the kick up the ass the human race needs. Especially those of us fortunate enough to have been born in lands of plenty and opportunity. Maybe it’s not but to be honest contemplating the alternative is wrecking my head. So here’s hoping.

Latest
"Sweden has at least 100.000 and probably 200.000 Corona cases already", according to Anders Tegnell, head of the People Health's Department.
He says "it's a good thing if the majority of our population gets it, in time".
"No plans to close down any schools, restaurants, shops or whatever. If the kids get it, they won't be that sick".
The criticism directed towards him and his reasoning is massive.
To me it's phase 2 in our population strategy.

People really need to wake the fuck up Mark, this isn't something only 'old' people need to be frightened of. Elderly and those with underlying conditions (People who have had transplants, cancer treatment, diabetes etc). If it was remotely serious for kids, they wouldn't have left schools open for so long.
